A&P, Commerce Place, Greensboro NC (again)

I’ve written about this store and how important it was to me before.

Most of you probably do not know that in my other life, I am an academic librarian whose job primarily involves supervising the digitization and online presentation of archival material. The job and the hobby intersect from time to time and this is one of those cases. These photos are part of a huge grant-funded project we recently unveiled on the history of Greensboro from Reconstruction to World War II. They’re great (and a rare find) because they show the pristine interior of this store at its grand opening. They come from the papers of Jim Sifford, who was apparently an A&P regional manager in the area. I’ll add more later.

Another great photo surfaced as well, but you’ve seen that one before.

    Hi……..
I’ve been trying…w/o much success…to recall the store that occupied the A&P location on Commerce Place…AFTER A&P left that building. It seems it might’ve been Levy’s..or something similar…and as I recall, might’ve been …circa 1966 – 1972. Store in question was a bit like Brendles, but was heavy into jewelry and possibly handguns, shotguns, etc.

Any thoughts on this? So far, I havn’t come up with much.

I’m pretty sure you’re thinking of Levy and Sons, but that store actually moved into the former Colonial on North Greene Street rather than the A&P on Commerce. They were there for a few years and then relocated to West Market Street. I think that second location is now a post office so I’ll see while the downtown store has been torn down. The A&P was, I believe, immediately turned into office space.
