Re: Fayetteville, AR and the Frankenstein Safeway

I'd really love to have seen what this thing looked like inside when Safeway was still in there.

Kroger 1990s interiors

Kroger people, Was there any widely implemented interior package between the "Bauhaus font/large letter" package of the early-to-mid 1980s and the "grid" package of the mid-to-late 1990s? I've never seen evidence of one in any existing stores, but i was not living in Kroger country starting in 1992,...

Re: NEW: Phoenix, 1925-1960

I had forgotten about Aj Bayless. I was in one of their new stores in the mid 80's. It was a horrible store, already outdated when it was built. It looks like they had the highest store count in 1960. I wonder if they were ever market share leader in Phoenix? I think they were pretty well up there ...

NEW: Phoenix, 1925-1960

By request: http://www.groceteria.com/place/arizona/phoenix/ This is an interesting one. Phoenix is where Safeway acquired the Pay'n Takit brand, and it was used here a good bit later than in other markets where it was introduced. It was also a fairly quick and easy city for fo because its major gro...

Re: Lansing, MI chain history 1925-60...with some caveats

Unfortunately, I hit a big stumbling block: A&P and Kroger were the city's largest grocers in the 1930s and 1940s, yet the 1930-40 directories for the city don't list individual A&P or Kroger stores. The books simply gave an office address followed by the disclaimer "and 18 (or however many) other ...

Re: New location list: Clarksburg WV 1925-2015

I'm working on Fairmont now; their A&P stores had similar dispositions. And there was apparently some connection between Giant Eagle and Shop 'n Save franchises in the 1990s that I do not fully understand.

Look for Fairmont later today,

New location list: Clarksburg WV 1925-2015

http://www.groceteria.com/place/us-west-virginia/clarksburg/ This one was a little unsatisfying. It took longer than it should have, there are not a lot of great artifacts (except the Franken-Kroger on Pike Street that I already knew about), and the city directory listings left a lot to be desired. ...

Re: NEW: Vancouver and Victoria BC

There actually were a couple of Dominion stores in Vancouver on the sheet. Three, to be specific. one of which seems still to be standing at 1332 Kingsway . Vancouver was, I think, Safeway's point of entry into Canada. I'm not sure if they purchased the entire Kirkhams chain or just selected stores,...

NEW: Vancouver and Victoria BC

Two new additions, both with a limited timeframe due to incomplete data from the available city directories:

Vancouver, 1925-1940: http://www.groceteria.com/place/canada- ... vancouver/

Victoria, 1925-1955: http://www.groceteria.com/place/canada- ... /victoria/
