Re: Major Update of Greensboro Section

It being my hometown (and the current base of the site) I figured it was high time I updated Greensboro to reflect listings through 2015:

Re: The mysteries of Food City stores in Canada

EMA apparently was an Oshawa brand, per a resume I found for their former corporate communications director (yes, I will follow the flow of information almost anywhere, even to Linkedin) and also per this, from here : The Oshawa Group is Canada's largest supplier of franchised IGA food markets. In O...

Re: Ann Arbor, MI chain grocery/supermarket history

My personal favourite is 704 S. Main St. , a Kroger store that opened in February 1942. It appears to have been identical to the Ann Street store originally. Unlike Ann Street, however, this store still stands in nearly perfect condition today as a 7-Eleven convenience store: a2-704smain.jpg GREAT ...

Re: The mysteries of Food City stores in Canada

FWIW, in the Toronto Star archives, Price Chopper seems to appear around 1992, while Food City seems to appear in 1965 and disappear around 1996. Both were usually listed alongside IGA and Food Town in ads (e.g. "Available at IGA, Food City, Food Town, and Price Chopper") so chances are on...

Re: Green Bay, WI chain supermarket history

The Des Moines Public Library in Iowa put all of their directories online ...but only through 1922, due to US copyright laws. The Walt Disney Company was founded in 1923. This is not a coincidence. It's generally safe to go to 1963 on those as the copyrights were never renewed, which was a requirem...

Re: Green Bay, WI chain supermarket history

But the biggest reason is this: All the directories I have access to are complete! Yes, I can scarcely believe it myself. Most other Wisconsin places such as Milwaukee, Sheboygan, and the Fox Cities are much more difficult to research because of missing information. Yeah, that happens a lot with th...

A pretty successful location?

The first Kroger store on this site (2100-2124 Beechmont Avenue in Cincinnati) opened in 1922. Three or four buildings later, there has been one here ever since: https://t.co/G0eBu3syH5 The first, obviously, was a small storefront that no doubt expanded and was likely replaced at some point. A super...

Re: The mysteries of Food City stores in Canada

I think Oshawa had the IGA franchise in Ontario as well and I would not be surprised if some of the Food City stores operated under this name before being converted to Price Chopper. I know that was the case with a lot of the Ontario Safeway stores they purchased around 1985 (which also eventually b...

Re: Madison, Wisconsin chain grocery/supermarket history

Good stuff, as always. Thanks!

Is this the Midvale Blvd store or was it already gone by this shot (some of the site seems to have been cleared already in the 2007 imagery)?

Re: NEW ARTICLE: The A&P Comes to Greensboro

Thanks!

A&P in Greensboro and Safeway in San Francisco are arguably the genesis (geneses?) of this site, so this was a special one for me.
