Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA

What was the location of the original Opelousas store, and what was its history? The original Opelousas location was on US190 at the western edge of town where 190 splits into one way Vine and Landry streets. It shared parking with a Howard Brothers store which outlived it. I'm not sure if they hel...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA

I believe Kroger left the Lafayette area in 1987 when the store in the store in Lafayette (Willow Street) and the Family Center in Morgan City were part of the sale of the Kroger stores in St. Louis to National (Loblaw Group). The store on Arnold Boulevard was closed and was a Campos Electronic Sto...

Re: List of A&P Centennial locations

A few for you to add, since I see you have none of the Louisiana stores: 600 US 80, Tallulah LA - Still standing but vacant. Last an independent BestYet. 321 W California Ave, Ruston, LA - Walmart Market now in the spot, store demolished in the early 2000's 140 E Union St, Minden, LA - Currently spl...

Re: Real Superstore locations

Didn't say it opened in 1996. I uploaded the article here (from Newsbank, same as the Albertsons in NOLA proper) which unfortunately is from a New Orleans paper, not a Lake Charles one. I would assume that the Real Superstore in LC was a stand-alone location not unlike the locations in Lafayette an...

Re: Real Superstore locations

There was one that was missing. A 1996 article mentions a store in Lake Charles, the only Schwegmann operation that far west. I imagine that it was closed by year-end like the Lafayette store was, but I don't know where the Lake Charles operation might've been. If one ever opened in LC, I don't kno...

I just gave you about 30-35 stores in Louisiana to keep you busy for a bit.

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....

Having worked for one of K-Mart's better regional competition, I can tell you that you're missing something big: K-Mart's inexpensive, but often poor quality house brand merchandise, which was a long-term liability. It helped them live through the stagflation era of the 70s and 80s and it was margi...

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....

So if we're gonna make fanfic here..... Kmart history (if they had taken Walmart seriously from the beginning) By 1978, the company, renamed Kmart Corporation, became increasingly aware of regional competitors, like Wal-Mart Stores in Arkansas, Howard Brothers of Louisiana, and many others who were ...

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....

Alternate, fictional history for National Tea: In 1976, Canadian grocer Loblaw spun off its National Tea division and US Loblaws stores to its management. National Tea still was partially owned by George Weston Limited. National then sold off its weakest stores, such as Loblaws divisions in Los Ang...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

On I keep forgetting to add (where you can get a slight taste of the original façade) is this one in Chapel Hill NC: https://goo.gl/maps/AxdszumgXUQznNKZ8 Opened as a Family Center in 1969, converted to a superstore in 1972-73, and closed in 1989. Interesting; I've never seen a Family Center conver...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

I think I might've just stumbled upon another former Family Center location (which was later converted into a Kroger supermarket) https://www.google.com/maps/@34.7184406,-92.3476348,3a,28.7y,12.98h,94.38t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sx06y8E2Vjrva43t0RSjD3g!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 Is this another former Kroger FC...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

I found this newspaper ad listed several locations of old retail stores (of where to buy trainsets, what the page was originally advertising) https://www.newspapers.com/newspage/382222633/ I looked at the (which according to this website) the former TG&Y store located at 1600 W Jackson St, Maco...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

By chance could this Kroger in Balch Springs originally start out as a former Family Center? https://www.google.com/maps/@32.71995,-96.6205108,3a,75y,325.23h,88.31t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s4qsvLm0Cra4iKv6MsMMhZQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192 No, that was actually a Safeway; one of the last new stores before the D...

Re: Kroger in Lafayette LA

I collected these from an 1983 ad. It's possible one more was built before pull-out in I believe 1985 but it's unlikely. http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?p=20628#p20628 https://www.upi.com/Archives/1983/11/22/An-Ohio-based-grocery-store-chain-closed-six-of-its/7446438325200/ Kroger lef...
