Re: Pensacola, FL: Former A&P and Winn-Dixie?
The store could have been a WD at one point in its life, but I don't believe it was built that way. I believe this store was a Delchamps. WD almost never built stores that new without a centered entrance. Delchamps always situated the entrance to one side or the other. It is entirely possible that D...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
I found a picture of the sign on Flickr.

I don't remember the tagline being there, but the rest is pretty accurate, including the font on the sign.

Re: 1970s superstore-era Kroger store interiors?
I would agree with the Big Lots/Superstore correlation. I went to a Big Lots store in Hot Springs, AR in a former superstore. This particular store had a separate pharmacy, and there was a door between both. The drug store area was the furniture part. I believe that most of the decor accents were go...

Re: A&P New Orleans French Quarter STILL OPEN!!
At the time of my original message, the division hadn't been sold yet (I was there at Labor Day; the buyout was announced a few weeks later). My understanding is that Rouses won't change much.

Re: Older Kmart interiors (orange and otherwise)
If my memory serves, this interior started appearing in 1978-1979. I base this on my hometown Kmart experience. The Longview, TX Kmart was built in 1976 with the previous interior, and it was green. The store was repainted almost a year or two later. When this store was expanded and updated in 1991,...

Re: Lawsuit Threat
After a few months working in IT for a large law firm, I can understand the sue-happy culture. I made a lot of money from it. I left it because I remembered that I hated lawyers. This guy is one reason why. I think that this site provides the most comprehensive supermarket history of any site on the...

Re: Those little roller-coaster things groceries traveled on
It was also not unusual to see those at the back of the store as well. When I worked for Winn-Dixie in 1990, the Texas division was not yet delivering palletized shipments to the stores, so we had to throw the boxes out of the truck onto a set of rollers. That was a lot of work.

Re: Mervyns
The closed stores were further east. There were stores in Florida at one time, thanks to former parent Dayton Hudson, now Target. Most recently, they left Louisiana, Texas and Colorado. There were only 7 stores in Louisiana, and three of those were closed in New Orleans after Katrina and never reope...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
Lake Charles' layout is original. The only problem is that the decor package is gone. I think Orange is close, but I've never been inside that store. This New Iberia store has the grocery side layout, but the GM side was gutted for the bowling alley.

Re: Kroger Family Centers
I got a few pictures of the New Iberia store today. Here goes: http://www.a-twell.com/ni1.JPG This is a wide shot of the front of the store. Note the two entrances. In the original Family Center, the checkouts would have been between these entrances. Now, the left entrance goes into a bowling alley,...

Brookshire and Brookshire Bros. emerged as the stronger regional chains in East Texas and Central Louisiana during this period as well.Winn-Dixie was stronger in New Orleans which never had Kroger as well as Baton Rouge, and the former Fort Worth Winn-Dixie operation had a stronger North Texas pres...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
It seems that most of the Kroger Family Centers were either in peripheral markets beyond the pirmary market core or an expansion market. Houston and Dallas would have received superstores with outlying towns got the Family Center, though Baytown is a fairly close-in suburb by Houston standards. I h...

Re: Kroger Family Centers
The exteriors on Morgan City, Orange, Lake Charles and New Iberia are relatively intact. The last time I was there (+/- 13 years ago), Mattoon is still intact. Marshall had a greenhouse added in the 80's. Longview's entire facade was removed and replaced in 1982-1983, and that was remodeled 2 years ...

Kroger Family Centers
In the late 60's/early 70's, Kroger built a type of store called Kroger Family Center. They were larger than the typical Kroger of the time, running approximately 70,000 sq. ft. I know these stores existed in at least the following locations: Mattoon, IL (E. IL 16, now Big Lots) Lafayette, LA (Downt...
