Re: History of Safeway in Portland, OR Since 1921

Ben (and other interested parties): I'd love to add a Portland area feature, so contributions are most welcome. A comprehensive Safeway list would be a great start. And if anyone came up with info on other chains, that would be great too. It's an area I'd love to reseach on my own if time and geogra...

Re: Wrigley in Atlanta?

Wrigley was a banner used by Allied Supermarkets, who operated some of the Kmart Foods locations in the southeast. As I mention in the Charlotte section of the site , and in the Kmart Foods topic , Allied rebranded some of the Kmart Foods locations in Charlotte as Wrigley stores in 1975. It was a ve...

Re: Goodbye, Tower Records

This is sad: the Sunset Strip Tower Records is about to be torn down:

I guess there's nothing LA needs more than another "three-story, 52,000-square-foot combination office building, retail shop and health club"...

I'd love to see pictures of any of these buildings. Do any of them still have relatively intact exteriors?

LA History Capsule?

HI all, I'm working on some site upgrades, and I'm thinking it would be really nice to have at least a capsule/summary page on the site covering LA area chain history. I'm probably never going to give LA the intensive treatment I've given some other California cities, simply because (a) it's too big...

Atlanta History Solicited

Hi all, I'm hoping to add an Atlanta page to the site sometime soon, and I wanted to solicit a very general history of chain operations there. It would be great if someone were interested in actually writing one for me, but I'm not going to hold my breath. That said, this topic might be a great plac...

Re: Kmart in Paramus NJ: Former Penn Fruit/Shop-Rite?

I would assume that the Kmart took over adjacent space in addition to the Penn Fruit location, or else this is one really small Kmart. I've seen this photo before and I've always been curious about the history. It's good to get some information.

I've split the discussion of the Kmart/Penn Fruit/Shop-Rite in Paramus NJ into a new topic here:

Re: Chicago, IL: Kohl's (?) that became Eagle and then Dominicks

Anyone remember Kohls, Eagle, or this store design? Welcome aboard. The example you provided (the Kmart in NJ) is very similar to a Kohl's prototype, and there were apparently some stores of this design in Chicago per another thread on this board. The actual Kmart pictured was almost certainly not ...

Re: West Covina area grocery history

Quick question... how do you access the LA Times archives? You would need access through an academic (or perhaps a public) library to access them at no cost. If you have a library card, you might check the "electronic resources" page of your library's website to see if it offers access to...

Re: Lucky/American Stores merger

Only certain stores had to be divested. To oversimplify, American eventually ended up selling off most of its Alpha Beta stores in Southern California and a few scattered stores in Northern California. Chad or one of the other SoCal experts can probably clarify better than I can, but I think I have ...
