Re: Brea CA

Chick Fil-A officially opens Jan 13. Rite Aid is now Total Wine (a new chain similar to BevMo). Border's lost the Albertsons exterior as part of the remodel.

Re: Van de Kamp's Restaurant Sites

I always thought the Don Carlos Mexican Restaurant on Valley/Azusa in La Puente CA was a VDK or Alphy but it is not on the list in the previous post (from Esther Cramer's book). It sits in the same shopping center as the former 1950's-era Alpha Beta (now Bodega R Ranch) and according to the real est...

Re: Original Jack in the Box sites

There is a vacant red-and-black Jack's location in Oceanside CA on Mission Ave east of I-5.

Many red-and-black units still exist in Southern California today such as Covina (Grand Ave/Covina Blvd), West Covina (Amar/Azusa), and Rowland Heights (Colima/Nogales).

Re: Taco Bell Conversions

The Walnut/West Covina location (Amar/Nogales) looked exactly like photo #3 when it first opened. The interior has been remodeled twice during my lifetime - once as a bright mansion decor (casa) and now as a dimmed space-age interior which makes the interior look much smaller than the mansion decor)...

Re: Former Arby's locations

Alosta Ave near Citrus Ave near the Azusa/Glendora border across the street from Azusa Pacific University recently closed (I think it was in the middle of this past summer). This location had the large sign "Arbys Roast Beef is Delicious). I have a picture of that sign on one of my old cell pho...

Re: Disappearing Sizzlers in your area

Local history writer David Allen of the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin (Ontario, CA) last month wrote about the disappearing Sizzlers in the Inland Empire and this location in Rancho Cucamonga. http://www.insidesocal.com/davidallen/2010/12/rc-sizzler-may-sizzle-again.html -The West Covina location (No...

Re: Contractors Warehouse/HDSupply, Pomona CA

HD Supply was part of Home Depot (hence the HD in the name) and a few years was spun off as an independent retailer by Home Depot and is no longer affiliated with Home Depot.

Re: Bristol Farms

Bristol was/is owned by Albertsons/Supervalu along with the one and only Lazy Acres store in Santa Barbara County. Though part of Albertsons, it operated independently and basic store supplies (especially price signage, free recipe cards, etc) did not come from Albertsons Printing & Supply in Fu...

Re: Vons Locations, 1967

La Mirada's Vons store (off Imperial Hwy and Valley View) is now Bestway Supermercado #2 (opened since late October). Their old #2 used to be in North Pomona. Bestway is a private 15-store chain (owned by a J Solanki Enterprises) affiliated with Unified Grocers. My local store (West Covina) was a 19...

Re: Does anyone remeber Fazios?

Go to the small Albertsons on Sierra Madre Blvd and Michillinda in Sierra Madre (north of the 210 Freeway). Its like you're stuck in the 1970's because the decor was originally a Fazio's. Albertsons acquired Fazio's in 1978 and kept this particular store as is. When I visited that store last year, i...

Re: HOWS closing all but one site

Dean, ValleyMax in Escondido was a Ralphs with a similar exterior to Rosemead Supermarket. Do you remember DiHo Market in City of Industry on Gale (a branch of the store that was popular in Monterey Park in 1989)? I thought it was the Alpha Beta/Ralphs/Fresco building, or it might be one of the stri...

Pomona (Phillips Ranch area) supermarkets update

The southwestern part of the City of Pomona near the junction of Highways 60 and 71, better known as Phillips Ranch is home to 2 supermarkets: WinCo Foods #57 - opened 2005. Former HomeBase/House2Home. I've been to all 3 incarnations of this building. The other two stores that I visited (Temecula on...

Re: CLAREMONT CA--Albertsons site closing

Jimenez Ranch Market on Indian Hill and San Bernardino Ave was a '60's era Alpha Beta, but that area is Pomona and not Claremont. At one time, there were 4 Alpha Beta/Albertsons/Food4Less lineage stores along about 2 miles of Indian Hill Blvd in the Claremont/Pomona area; - Boys/Food4Less (now El Su...
