I have to agree...the purple logo I always thought looked a bit weird for a taco restaurant. The new logo, while still using purple, is slightly better in my opinion.

What about the Kmart at 122nd & Sandy (#4288)? Not sure what year it opened, but it is an older store...

Re: Are there any older-style Taco Bells left in the US?

I THINK there may be one left in operation in the Pacific Northwest, either in the Portland area or the Seattle-Tacoma area. I can't recall exactly where but I seem to remember one still open as a Taco Bell within the past year. I do know of one that still has the brown sign...kind of. The Kelso, WA...

Re: Lewis County Mall, Chehalis, WA

I did a little research and found that it opened in 1974 with Sears and Value Giant at the initial anchors. Value Giant was the discount department store division of Castle & Cooke, parent company of the Dole Food Co. Their stores were primarily in Northern California, but there were a couple i...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

I stumbled across these photos today. They appear to be of an early design for scanners installed at a Kroger in 1972-1973. Evidently the 'bulls-eye" sticker could be scanned at the register. http://idhistory.com/rca/Kroger%20Kenwood%20Supermarket%20-%20%201972-73%20photos.pdf Also an image he...

Lewis County Mall, Chehalis, WA

I recently stopped at the closing Sears in Chehalis, WA and took a walk through this mall. There isn't much of anything left as far as retail in the mall as it is mostly offices now. It won't really qualify as a mall any more when Sears is gone. I am curious about the history of the mall. I know tha...

Re: Kroger Family Centers

With Kmart, the actual name wasn't Big K, but Big Kmart. They never marketed it as Big K, as that could have caused problems. There were three names at the time that appeared on stores: Kmart, Big Kmart and Super Kmart (originally Super Kmart Center). Each represented a differently marketed store (...

Re: domed/arched roofs non-aesthetic purpose?

I have also seen a number of early Kmart stores which had a dome shape to the roof, but are hidden inside by suspended ceilings.

Re: South Shore Mall, Aberdeen, WA history

I am still curious though where Emporium operated. Troutman's Emporium was based out of Eugene, Oregon. They operated primarily in WA, OR, and ID, but also had two strip mall stores in NV (Elko and Winnemucca), plus one in Chico, CA. The Chico store was just called "Troutman's" because of...

Re: Is It True Fred Meyer Dropped the MY-TE-FINE Brand in 1987?

That sounds about right. We only occasionally shopped at Fred Meyer when I lived in Boise, which had only opened a full-line store a couple years prior and at that time was still operating two former Grand Central stores without food departments. I moved to WA in 1988 and remember the name was not ...

Re: South Shore Mall, Aberdeen, WA history

The big gaping hole was indeed a Kmart that closed in 2003. There was a second mall in Aberdeen called Wishkah Mall, which was anchored by Lamont's, Ernst, and Top Foods. That mall was torn down in 2000 except for the Lamont's (by then a Gottschalks, now a Ross) and Top Foods (which stayed until 20...

Re: Rotating Kmart road signs

There were TONS of these out there. My first memories of Kmart involved the odd L shaped store in Danville, IL. It had the rotating K and the Plaza sign. It was at the top of a hill on N. Vermilion, so it was a focal point that you just didn't miss. Later in life, we moved to Texas, and the Tyler s...

Rotating Kmart road signs

I was reading an article about a closing Kmart in Mishawaka, Indiana which had some old photos and came across this one: https://bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com/southbendtribune.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/7/9f/79f27bd4-882c-11e7-b3cf-6f6dcde08acc/599dc1f26294d.image.jpg?resize=1200%2...

Re: Camas, WA Safeway Question

Stores will sometimes change the address when a replacement store faces a different street. One I know of is the Albertsons in Boise at Overland & Vista. The original store (which started life as a Safeway) faced Overland and had an Overland address. When Albertsons replaced this one with a new ...
