Anybody know anything at all about the history of this chain? Were other locations this interesting? What kind of shape are the former locations in now?

Re: Colonial Big Stars (Post 1960's-before A&P takeover)

I love all of the old pictures of the old Colonial/ Big Star food markets from the 50's and 60's. But I'm puzzled i've not seen any pics of (post 1960's) stores that they had, before they became A&P's. Also does anyone know/have any pics/ads of what the old Big Star logo looked like, both in th...

The former Mayfair location listed as "San Lorenzo - Paseo Grande at Hesperian Blvd." is most likely the abandoned-looking building right on that corner, it has a rounded roof like many older supermarkets. I'm familiar with that building, and you're probably right. The Mayfair's address i...

was??? They still are! Every VONS/Pavilions I walk into have Safeway brands all over the place. For every national brand, there are 5 Safeway brands of the same item! BUT Safeway's store brand isn't bad at all. I think they are just as good if not better then the national brands. Let's avoid gettin...

Thanks. Did they even bother with remodels or any sort of capital improvements? I'm assuming most of the stores had been upgraded by Grand Union in the mid-1980s.

he ad also mentioned quite prominently, "PICKETS DO NOT PERTAIN TO SUPERMARKET." Does anyone know what this means? Was White Front unionized? Does this refer to labor strife? Sounds to me as it White Front, like Kmart, had some stores with leased grocery departments operated by other reta...

A&P/Big Star, Atlanta, 1992

Just out of curiosity, when A&P acquired all the Atlanta-area Big Star stores around 1992, what banner did they end up operating under? Was it A&P, Sav-a-Center, or something else?

Hi all. Just a quick preemptive note now that the merger is actually happening. Let's please try to keep this topic focused on HISTORY rather than any current operational issues with Eckerd, per the forum rules.

Thanks,

It's a nice one, and still has elements of a 1970s interior package that was probably its first and only remodel. Glad to know what it was.

Heh, heh. I had no idea Kohl's had food stores until about two years ago. Privelage of working in a library. They weren't directly cconnected to the department store chain, although I think the two families were related back down the line somewhere, sort of like Lowes Foods and Lowes Home Improveme...

Interesting. I had no idea Kohl's ever ventured south of Milwaukee.

Thanks a bunch and welcome aboard. The board is a little light on midwest history, so we'll look forward to hearing more.

That was cool. I'd forgotten about that jingle and background music, but I remember it clearly now. Off-topic, but it was also interesting to see the "JimRockford: Private Detective" promo, which reminded me of when shows that were still running in new episodes on the network had to take d...
