Re: Comprehensive list of Kmart locations

Thank you. That is very helpful. Another thing I have noticed is that a good portion of the Group 3 stores (3XXX), at least through the late 1970s, almost always featured a lower ceiling. However, this was not limited to that series. One I know of was in Spanaway, WA, store 7904, which opened in 198...

Re: Comprehensive list of Kmart locations

This might have been discussed on here before (or at Retailwatchers), however, I can't seem to find where, if it was at all. I understand that the first one or two digits in Kmart store numbers indicated to some extent the type and/or size of building it was. I was wondering if anybody has some kind...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

I don't think all of those DTS registers had the side/back displays. I remember seeing them with a solid black plastic insert where a display would be. While the PayLess Drug store closest to my house in Boise had the side displays, I do remember at least one small grocery store that had the same re...

Re: Kmart checkouts over the years

It seemed like in the early 90's they got different equipment and it was from a variety of providers. In the late 90's Kmart had managed to move most of the locations to the IBM Supermarket Software even if they were not using IBM Hardware. For a while Kmart ran its old software in the non-Supercen...

Re: Disappearing Sizzlers in your area

I am wondering if current events are going to cause Sizzler to eliminate the buffet in remaining restaurants, or to close altogether. There is a long-time Sizzler in Longview, WA where I live but has been completely closed during the Covid 19 restrictions and is not offering take-out at all. Sizzler...

Re: Kmart checkouts over the years

Kmart had a wide selection of electronic cash registers before they settled into the IBM system that has evolved over the past 20 years. Kmart used NCR Class 5 mechanical cash registers well into the late 1970s and in places, the early 1980s. When stores upgraded to electronic registers, I saw thes...

Re: Short-lived grocery stores

The one that sticks out to me is a store called Food World at 136th & Mill Plain in Vancouver, WA. This was an attempt by Zupan's to operate a discount store format, and was a new-build. It made it about a year before it closed, Safeway took over the location. I think one other Food World store ...

Re: 1960s Era (marina and gable) Safeway PA Systems

I have seen a number of Safeway Marina stores which used what looked more like air vent diffusers as speaker covers.

Re: Safeway Grand Opening-Photo-Unknown Date & Location

Nice find. I have to wonder though why so many furniture stores feel the need to remove so many fluorescent tubes. It's the little things like that which makes stores look more tired than they really are.

Re: Old-School Supermarket Meat Departments

As for the meat wrapping machine...in stores that still package meat onsite, the windows have gradually given way to taller refrigerated cases that can fit more product. This was a change I noticed at Albertsons during the 1980s, but also keep in mind that they added service meat/seafood counters in...

Re: New location list: Boise, 1925-1960

There were no listings for Fred Meyer in the directories, hence the omission. It's possible they were listed under "department stores", particularly if there were not grocery departments in the earliest stores. In Portland, they were always listed under "grocers." Next time I'm ...

Re: New location list: Boise, 1925-1960

A couple comments/notes: 4983 N Glenwood St was D'Alessandro's before it was Maxx/Max Foods. I am unsure when D'Alessandro's first opened, I want to say late 1970s, early 1980s at the latest. I am curious why Fred Meyer is not included (it is listed for Portland) I can say that, while I do not remem...

Re: Original Jack in the Box sites

The location in Longview, WA, which is a late 1970s build that largely still had its original appearance, closed a while back and is undergoing a major remodel which is involving removing its original facade. I would guess any other older ones will be following suit. My guess is that this is in resp...

Re: NEW: Portland (Oregon) 1932-1987

The Fred Meyer complex might be Portland's most historically-interesting supermarket location, but the two most aesthetically-pleasing supermarkets might be the Safeways at 6125 SE 52nd Avenue and 1335 N Mason St . Both of these are early-1950s buildings with a pylon, barrel roof, and the character...

Re: Jack In The Box "Cube" signs

The Jack In The Box in Longview, WA, which I believe was built in the 1970s, has a cube road sign still in use, which has been updated to the new logo. I was curious as to how late these were used, as I have seen these in only a handful of locations. Not THAT long ago, I can name at least two store...
