On the subject of restaurant signage, I remember a year and a half ago, the last time I was in Salem, Oregon, seeing an old Pizza Hut Sign where it reads at the bottom "nationally famous restaurant". There are also several Denny's in Portland using old neon signs.

Another chain to use old logos heavily was Wards. Wards had no less than 3 different logos in use in its stores. There were the 70s logo, 80s logo and the last logo in use on stores until they did fold shop in 2001. There were at least half a dozen Wards that had just completed remodels at the time...

older major non-grocery chain signage

I recently drove through Aberdeen, WA and noticed the Sears there still has the older style sign used until the mid-80s. This got me wondering if any other chains still have older signs in use. The ones that came to mind are: JCPenney (specifically the era they were called Penney's), K-mart (the old...

I am also wondering if Fred Meyer will gradually phase out the "marketplace" stores as many of them are in older locations. Other Fred Meyer "Marketplace" stores in the Portland/Vancouver area: Burlingame - 7555 SW Barbur Blvd in Portland (opened 1950-51) Raleigh Hills - 7700 SW...

The Fourth Plain Fred Meyer is slated for closure: http://www.columbian.com/news/localNews/11132006news76208.cfm Ironic that the development for the replacement store is called Grand Central. Although named for the fact it is near Grand Boulevard, Fred Meyer did purchase a chain called Grand central...

Thrifty operated a store in Kelso's Riverway Plaza in the 80s. I moved to the area in 1988, and remember about 1990 or maybe 1991, it became a Pay 'N Save. The store changed again when PayLess bought Pay 'N Save, then again when Rite Aid bought PayLess. I have been told this particular location was ...

The Fred Meyer at I-205 and Mill Plain also still uses the old style sign. Both Mill Plain and Fourth Plain are somewhat unusual in that the Fred Meyer letters are white, but light up red at night. One minor change occured at Fourth Plain during the late 90s when it was converted to a Fred Meyer mar...

Did any chains, including Safeway, ever use a marina-style store where the arches ran across the side, instead of the front of the store?

Non-Safeway Marina-style stores

I got to wondering how many chains adapted a version of the Safeway marina-style of building. By saying that, I am referring to stores which were originally built by another chain, and not originally by Safeway. One chain that comes to mind is Albertsons. I know there are a couple of older stores in...

Worth noting..the Milwaukie K-Mart was not remodeled, and retained the old K-Mart logo along with the orange interior colors, until it was remodeled into a "Big K-Mart". Also, the former K-Mart at Jantzen Beach mall recently reopened as a Burlington Coat Factory. They repainted the ceiling...

I have been inside the Lake Oswego safeway pictured. If I am not mistaken, it was one of the first lifestyle remodels in the Portland area, before they updated the logo, and possibly the only one on a marina Safeway. It did have lighting very similar to what the lifestyle remodels have been install...

I moved to Washington after Vip's was gone. However, several locations became Denny's. Many of them had signs that, if you looked closely, almost looked like an upside down version of the Denny's "shield" I have been told that they used the Vip's sign frames. These signs are disappearing t...

This former Safeway in Kelso, Washington looks much like this picture, but a little more run-down these days: http://www.groceteria.com/safeway/slideshows/1960-current/07.html It will soon become state offices. See thread titled "Former Marina Safeway in Kelso, Washington." http://www.groc...

In the late 80s, Fred Meyer split up their Longview, Washington store into two buildings, and moved sporting goods, home improvement, and garden into a seperate building in front of the main store and they had an open entrance like that. I have not seen that used at any other Fred Meyer. That partic...
