Safeway in Houston

Post by Ephrata1966 »

Safeway exited the Houston, TX market in 1988 when their stores became AppleTree. I heard their Houston division was 18 years old at that time. Their only stores there I know were built in 1983. In 1994, AppleTree stores ironically became Randalls. Randalls became big around the same time, and ironically they all have Safeway decor now.

Actually, I believe the Apple Tree stores were sold off piecemeal and that Randall's only bought some of them.

I imagine some of these stores were also probably former Weingarten stores that Safeway had purchased from Grand Union around 1984. I don't know how much presence Safeway had in Houston before buying these Weingarten stores. Anyone?
