Original Safeway in Houston

Post by rbtexas »

I thought this was interesting, I searched through the Houston Chronicle archives, and found this statement..... from an article when Safeway sold its Houston division to private investment groups that formed AppleTree Markets.

..."Safeway first entered the Houston market in the early 1970s as it was trying to overtake the A&P chain as the dominant grocery of the nation. Its first Houston store opened in May 1970 at 7510 Bellfort, near Telephone Road. Safeway expanded rapidly and by December 1971 had 13 stores in the Houston area."

That being said, that store, is still in business today, as Houston-based Fiesta Mart.

I know it has changed, and is different inside and out, but I found that very interesting. Safeway to AppleTree to Fiesta, and going on 40 years!!! Wow......

Passage above taken from Houston Chronicle Archives, 6/14/1988.

Just found that interesting....
