Korvettes was hardly trying to emulate anybody else -- they were the store others were emulating, as they were one of the original discount chains, having started in about 1947. My recollection is that they started more upscale, especially since they had stores in midtown Manhattan, and attempted to change their image to more mass market discounter later on, when they adjusted the name from E. J. Korvette to Korvettes.

Perhaps I'm not remembering correctly, but I never viewed Jamesway as being the slightest bit upscale; I always thought they were much lower end than either Zayre or Ames.

They were large stores and the one at Cederbrook Mall that Food Fair made into a Pantry Pride was the busiest and most successful store in the division.
Do you know where they were, and if so, what are they now?

Jamesway

I also recall that Jamesway was somewhat of a W.T. Grants - both of which were never known to be upscale. I remember visiting a Jamesway in, I believe, Port Jervis, New York on a family outing to what we called Upstate. I bought a 45 RPM record there - I do not know how I remember that. It was located next to a Shop Rite Supermarket. It was about 1974. We stopped there to buy a few things while on vacation that year. Yes, I recall it being a rather large store but no way upscale. I also recall large blue neon letters noting Jamesway across the front of the store. It caught my attention by its contrast to the large red letters noting Shop Rite. It was also the first time I visited a Victory Supermarket. Oh, what a boring life I have had.

" Nanuet Korvettes "

We had a Korvettes in Nanuet, NY. It opened early '63. I recall it was very stylish when it first opened. It was definitely above Bradlee's. It had elaborate store displays with the changing seasons. Since I was 4 when it opened I don't remember much. I vaguely remember a market connecting. The store closed in 1980. It's now a NWL store. After Korvettes it was a Service Merchandise. There is a Pathmark at the other end. Though it's too far to have been the market. It may have been a Hill's. Old local papers is where I get my info.

I believe that at one time Hills was owned by a company called Pueblo International, I think out of san Jaun. When I first moved to Central Florida there was a warehouse Store called Xtra that was owned by the same company,

I tend to think of Korvettes in the same breath as of Two Guys and Great Eastern, although I imagine that they might disagree with that assessment. I seem to dimly recall the phrase "discount department stores" being associated with them in their advertising.

The two most important departments to this kid were at both Two Guys and Korvettes: toys, including model trains, and records.

There used to be a Hills in Carle Place, NY here (right on the spot where the Waldbaum's parking lot is on the left): http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&F ... &encType=1 That big lot of dirt was once a Korvette's store, which became a BOCES (school) campus after Kovette's went under, now the property is supposedly going to be used for housing.

I also recall a Hills being on Middle Country road in selden, Selden Thrift, which is the major store of this shopping center used to be a hills if I remember. Its located on the south side of Middle Country across from RiteAid (can't miss it). I am not 100% sure on this, can someone confirm?

There was another hills location in Patchogue on montaulk highway. Its now Patchogue Health Center, but the building still retains some hills features outside. This store in the early 70's would be replaced with a MUCH larger store in North Patchogue which did great business, looked nice inside and was HUGE for its time, In the late 70's (when hills disappeared) it became a Waldbuams. It was intact from the hills days until 2004 when it was renovated and doubled in size and is now a large Waldbaums.

Anyone know of anymore Hills locations or has pictures of any?

Found a few more--Garden City Park, NY...now Pathmark, was Hills originally; and there was another one in Glen Cove (to my recollection, became Foodtown, closed, reopened as Foodtown a 2nd time, then switched to Edwards, not sure what it is now)

Google search says the Glen Cove one is now a Walgreen's.

I CAN ONLY OFFER THIS DIMLY FLICKERING MOMENT OF MY DISTANT PAST ON THE SUBJECT OF HILL'S SUPERMARKETS...

I LIVED IN MELVILLE, L.I. (W.SUFFOLK) JUST BELOW HUNTINGTON AND HUNTINGTON STATION MOST OF MY LIFE FROM 1959-2008. I SAW ALOT CHANGE, COME, STAY AND GO. IN THE SOUTH HUNTINGTON AREA, JUST SOUTH OF THE WALT WHITMAN MALL (BUILT IN 1962) WAS A STAND ALONE DEPT STORE CALLED E.J.KORVETTE'S. ALONG SIDE TO THE NORTH AND SET BACK A BIT WAS A VERY NICE BIG HILL'S SUPERMARKET. IT WAS FOR A WHILE CALLED HILLS-KORVETTES (OR VICE-VERSA) AND THEY ACTUALLY HAD BOTH NAMES PRINTED ON THEIR PAPER BAGS (PRE-PLASTIC ERA).

THE ONE THING THAT STANDS OUT IN MY VERY POOR MEMORY AS A CHILD WAS, THAT ON THE NORTH END OF THE WALT WHITMAN MALL WAS ANOTHER HILL'S SUPERMARKET LESS THAN A 1/2 MILE AWAY. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT WAS WEIRD...TWO SAME NAME STORES BEING SO CLOSE TO EACH OTHER. WE ALWAYS SHOPPED IN THE KORVETTES ONE SINCE MY SISTER WORKED IN KORVETTES (WITH GERALDO RIVERA'S MOM). I DON'T THINK THE TWO LASTED VERY LONG AND WERE GONE BY THE MID-70'S. HILLS WAS GONE COMPLETELY FROM L.I. NEVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN. KORVETTES WAS GONE AS WELL BY THE EARLY-MID 80'S.

KORVETTES WAS BROKEN UP INTO MULTIPLE RETAIL STORES AND A RESTUARANT. THE HILLS WAS BROKEN DOWN INTO 4 SEGMENTS OF RETAIL INCLUDING A TOYS'R US. THE OTHER HILLS TO THE NORTH AND ATTACHED TO THE MALL, WAS GIVEN THE SAME TREATMENT...5-6 SMALL RETAIL SHOPS UNTIL THE LATE 90'S(?) WHEN SIMON TOOK OVER THE MALL AND BUILT A THIRD ANCHOR STORE AND THE MALL BECAME VERY SNOOTY! THE CENTER OF THE MALL ALSO HAD A NOW DEFUNCT MCCRORY'S, A PLACE I LOVED TO GO AND HANG AT. DIDN'T WE ALL!

On the subject of Korvette City, I know from reading old newspaper ads that there was one on RT. 22 in Union, NJ at the Blue Star Shopping Center, it was a large ad showing a Korvette's auto repair facility and several other stores

While doing some research, I found info on a Hills Supermarket in Newburgh, NY. The store opened 12-13-72 in the Zayres Shopping Center on Route 17K, and was Hills 71st store. It was a 30,000 square foot store and was followed by 5 Long Island store grand openings in the same week. This Hills became a Shop-Rite in less than 2 years.

I suppose you could describe a uboat as a platform hand truck.

Hills was known for a short period of time as “The Hills”. Seem to remember an ad come to The Hills nearest you” They were purchased by Pueblo International in mid 70’s. Then later in 77 Food Fair ‘s Pantry Pride division purchase them and a year later closed them all. Waldbaum’s and King Kullen purchased quite a few.
