Dominick's

With Dominick's in Chicago officially giving notice to employees that they intend to close all stores by December 28th Chicago Tribune posted an interesting photo pictorial of the chain through the years.

Kind of a bummer that no Dominick's stores could be saved--the loss of Dominick's was the first major loss of Safeway, and probably would've continued to cut back (the Tom Thumb/Randalls division next, likely) had they not been been picked up by Albertsons.

The south side Dominick's in Park Ridge also had those I guess you could call them lampposts with the check out counter numbers on them.

Though I'm sure they all had them.

Higgins and Foster had them, too. When they built the new store at Devon and Nagle the gaslight-style register markers were gone in favor of a more modern look. If memory serves, the store had the huge graphics of food and a Helvetica font throughout the store similar to what National rolled out in the 1970's. Interestingly, the Nagle/Devon store was built on the site of a Butera that had been a National.
