If you have the time, can you post the Vons locations as well?

The Downey store was in Stonewood Shopping Center and is the store pictured at the beginning of this thread.

re: Monrovia location
That Starbucks is in the Pavilions shopping center. The whole center was newly built in the mid-80s, so I assume the original supermarket at that address was demolished.

re: Arcadia location
The CVS (formerly Sav-On) is made up of two adjoining stores, so it makes sense that it was a Super S at one time, but I don't know if that means the original market was demolished prior to that.

I don't live in the area anymore so I can't check, but I grew up in Cucamonga. The old Shopping Bag on Foothill in Upland was where my dad and fellow Sheriff's posse held their pancake breakfasts back in the 70s. It was later turned into a Sears Surplus store and the last time I was down there, I stopped in the Pep Boys that was currently there. I just street viewed a map of the address listed above and the pick shows the Pep Boys still. Although they shortened the sign, it's still easy to see it on the end of the building. I'm now wondering if they tore down this location. The pic of the Google street view is here

As I preview this post, I see that the side is closed off. There used to be a single glass door that lead out the side to the larger parking lot. It was sometimes an exit and sometimes a fire exit. I remember it had a long ramp from the door to the main sales floor with a steel handrail. We always tried to slide down it without getting caught.

2280 Atlantic Blvd, Monterey Park/RIGGIN - SPLIT SHOPPING CENTER. STAPLES?
earlier post mentioned this being an Albertsons

Negative.

I have a picture of it as Shopping Bag in the old Atlantic Square.
It became a Fazio's, then Albertsons.

It was demolished, with most of the old Atlantic Square, in the early 90's.
The site is where Ralphs is now. This location was small and had a rear entry and rear parking lot.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for clarifying where The Shopping Bag store was in Atlantic Square. I grew up in Monterey Park and my Grandparents lived on Divine Dr. right behind Atlantic Square. My cousins and I had many of baseball games in my Grandparents backyard. Hit plenty of baseballs into the alley behind the shopping center. My dad actually started working in that Shopping Bag store in the 1950's and went on to a carrier with Shopping Bag / Von's eventually becoming store Manager until he passed away when I was nine. I moved out of the area in the mid 70's and did not return to that area until about 2000. Again , Thanks for the info and helping bring back some great childhood memories.

RE: 331 N Glendale Ave, Glendale/CALIFORNIA - ALBERTSONS/WHOLE FOODS
Albertsons probably sold this location as part of the American Stores merger. I'll have to
check my list.

That store was not divested due to American Stores merger. It was operated for a year or so after the merger and was closed because it was under performing. Albertson's had not remodeled it since the late 70's.

I remember shopping in the Glendale store with my grandmother in the 60's before and after the sale to E.F. MacDonald and Fazios. Great memories. Isn't this location a Whole Foods today?

Although another posted here that a Shopping Bag existed in 1930 I never saw it. During WWII there was just one, on Colorado in the Eagle Rock neighborhood. Not long after the war's end another opened about 2 miles east, again on Colorado. A Mr. Hayden, a member of our church, was either the owner or one of the top officials. In 1949 and 1950 Mr Hayden allowed me to use one of his Shopping Bag trucks to take kids in our Boy Scout troop various places on weekends. (Big thrill, driving that truck at only 18!). In 1951 I went into the military - when I returned Shopping Bag had multiplied, Mr. Hayden had moved from the Eagle Rock neighborhood to San Marino, and I lost track of the old neighborhood.

Anyone have any ideas why Shopping Bag got sold?

I think it might be mentioned earlier in the thread but they merged with Vons and then the FTC decided to block the merger after it already happened.

"In 1960 it (Vons) acquired the sixth-largest, competitor Shopping Bag, a merger that was challenged by the Federal Trade Commission on antitrust grounds. In 1966 the United States Supreme Court ruled against Von's in United States v. Von's Grocery Co. (384 U.S. 270), forcing a re-divestiture of the stores, which were eventually sold to Fisher Foods.[3] "

According to Pleasant Family Shopping, Shopping Bag (along with five Vons stores) was sold in 1967 to E.F. MacDonald, who bought the Los Angeles A&P stores in 1968, who then in turn sold the entire chain to Fisher Foods in 1972, which renamed the stores as "Fazio's-Shopping Bag" and despite a few new stores, Fisher sold the chain to Albertsons in 1978. I wonder if Albertsons ended up getting a few A&P stores in the deal.

The only one I know for sure was the Santa Barbara store which opened originally as an A&P. Albertson's divested the store to Gelson's when they merged with Lucky.

The oldest portion on the left side is now a Chase bank (stand-alone) which seemed to have been where the original A&P might've been. The main store did exist as of 1967 so probably could've been built as an A&P (building new right next to the old store) but I thought A&P really didn't start upgrading their stores like that until at least the 1970s.

A&P was in the same exact building as Fazio's/Albertson's/Gelson's. There's a photo of it here:
http://www.groceteria.com/oldgalleries/ ... age59.html

When Gelson's did the remodel they added a small section to the left of the store for the deli department's kitchen but otherwise it's the same building.

I have an A&P ad from 1950 that lists their Santa Barbara store as being 1401 Chapala. That would have been this building:
