A Piggly Wiggly advertisement appeared in the November 12, 1959 edition of the San Diego Union. The slogan for Piggly Wiggly was “YOUR HOME TOWN GROCER --- Since 1922”. The ad listed the following the store locations:

(2) 4767 Palm Ave., La Mesa
(3) 3209 Thorn St., San Diego
(4) 3014 Juniper St, San Diego
(5) 3015 Wightman, San Diego

The ad also said that the following Piggly Wiggly stores were on open Sunday, including Meat Depts.:
(1) 7825 Broadway, Lemon Grove
(2) 3811 Sixth Ave., San Diego
(3) 801 Palm Ave., Imperial Beach
(4) 12580 Lakeside Dr., Lakeside
(5) 2511 “C” St., San Diego
(6) 1807 Robinson, San Diego

The main item for sale in the ad was ham, for 35 cents per lb.

801 Palm Ave., Imperial Beach: I'm fairly sure this is now the Goodwill store.

Sorry guys, but I've been at these San Diego stores for two and a half hours now... I woke up at 2:30 and got caught up... now the sun's coming out... damnit.

"Submariner" has done excellent work with his research on the current status of grocery store locations from the year 1959 in the San Diego area.

Actually, it appears the PW was opposite the strip mall from what is now the Goodwill store. I'm not sure what that used to be, but it looks like everything to the right of the theater was replaced sometime after PW left. I found a photo showing the Imperial Beach Piggly Wiggly! In perspective, the break in the buildings at the Piggly Wiggly is 8th St., and the white building in the far background is across the street of 9th St., which is now a modern 76 station. Note the PW has a barrel roof, which is not present in any of the current buildings.

Miracle Block Shopping Center, Imperial Beach, CA by dirtyblueshirt, on Flickr

This was apparently referred to as the "Miracle Block Shopping Center". It's fate as a whole is now in danger. The row between 8th and Delaware saw its last tenant move out recently, as the city declared eminent domain on the complex. I suspect the section between 8th and 9th is facing a similar fate, as it is emptying out slowly as well. It's just as well, really, the complexes have become an eyesore and IB is embarking on a plan to revitalize Palm Avenue from the 5 freeway to the ocean, and I can attest that it's much needed.

The Miracle Center is now completely vacant. The Goodwill finally moved out and moved across the street next to Wally's (former Big Bear). The Goodwill store in the Miracle center used to be a Rexall Drugs.

The Miracle Center will be razed, the property brought to street level. Businesses that have committed to occupying the new center are Fresh & Easy (yay!), Starbuck's, and Panda Express.

Of other note, there also used to be a Mayfair Market in Imperial Beach, I'm tracking that location down. There was also a Safeway at Palm & 13th. Judging by the buildings present, the original Safeway is long gone.
