Vons locations in 1950

Post by runchadrun »

This is a list of Vons locations from an ad in the Los Angeles Times on June 1, 1950. In case you're interested, canteloupes were 10c each and Sunsweet prune juice was 23c for a quart.

3644 W. Santa Barbara ("the worlds largest") (Santa Barbara is now known as MLK Blvd and this store has been the subject of discussion here in the past.)--Torn down for Crenshaw Plaza expansion

1500 W. Pico--Picture shows a Jons Market, but not listed on Jons' website

8106 W. Beverly Bl--Linen Outlet
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6934407

1020 S. Fairfax--not sure about this location. Address matches a physical therapy clinic.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=3591765

1020 S. Crenshaw--not sure. Address matches a Korean business called Hansohl Healthland.

840 S. Alvarado--Former Jons Market. Apparently the store was recently called Plaza Market and is now for lease. See http://www.traversrealty.com/subleases/ ... radoSt.pdf
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=3605360

1027 W. Manchester--Washington Mutual Bank

3667 W. Third St--Jons Market
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=3602108

5029 S. Vermont--possibly the "Challengers" building? The address matches the Challengers Boys & Girls Club.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=7001936

3334 W. Eighth St--Jons Market
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=6953168

8851 S. Western--Superior Food Warehouse (obviously a replacement store)
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=888057

6607 S. Atlantic, Bell--looks like some kind of indoor mall
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=7012714

6625 N. Van Nuys Blvd, Van Nuys--Jons Market
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=3141137

11473 Long Beach Blvd, Lynwood--The middle of an onramp to the 105 freeway
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ne=7021942

320 E. Manchester, Inglewood--Not sure, there are too many buildings on this block to figure it out.
http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2& ... ene=851136

1305 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica--The only one still operating as a Vons!

I'm sure the one in Santa Monica isn't original.

Was there any outside LA, or all in LA?

These were all the ones listed in the ad. Since this was the LA Times they may have only listed the LA locations.

It surprised me that the La Tijera location wasn't listed since I figured it was the same vintage as the Santa Monica store. IIRC, the SM store was numbered store 2 and the La Tijera location was numbered store 4.

Grocery stores were already getting into the 20,000 sq ft. range in 1950. The Vons in Santa Monica is very old. I would have guessed late 50's or early 60's by looking at it so it's not totally out of the question (unless they have remodeld or expanded it in the last couple of years) that it's the same store. Also the parking lot is in the back which was very common in the 1950s.

the Vons in santa monica is original. whats interresting about this store is that it used to have a "snack bar" and out door seating. in the break room they have a huge picture of the Vons when it first opened. i heard this store has been remodeled recently....not too sure tho....

up the street on lincoln and montana there is a Pavilions. back in the day it WAS a Safeway.

when was the last time live local was updated...?? they have a pic of the melrose and vine pavilions before it was remodeled! and its been 5 or more years since it was remodeled....
Pavilions, the new, the unusal, the BEST of everything!

More from the LA Times archive (tell me if I'm beating this archive to death...)

The Santa Monica store opened in August, 1939. It was the largest store in the chain at the time.
