Scolaris original stores in CA

Post by storewanderer »

Scolaris started on the CA central coast, but in the 80s sold their stores there to Lucky and bought Warehouse Markets in NV. In the late 80s, they returned to the central coast. So I have a few questions:

1. Where were the original central coast stores that were sold to Lucky? I came across some weird Albertsons in Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Carpinteria that were very small and had awkward but similar layouts and am suspisious about those stores.

2. What is the history behind the current CA Scolaris at 222 N. Milpas in Santa Barbara? Former Mayfair? It appears Scolaris has operated this store since 1988. http://s196.photobucket.com/albums/aa11 ... oto079.jpg

3. What parts of the interior of the Pismo Beach Scolaris at 555 Five Cities are leftovers from when the store was a Vons? I was thinking the wall letters were, until I visited the store in item 4. http://s196.photobucket.com/albums/aa11 ... oto079.jpg

4. What was this Paso Robles Store at 2121 Spring Street like as a Ralphs and Lucky? http://s196.photobucket.com/albums/aa11 ... oto255.jpg
Current exterior:http://s196.photobucket.com/albums/aa11 ... Spring.jpg

These CA Scolaris are sure a lot different from the NV Stores in terms of appearance.

1) The original stores were in: Lompoc (2), Orcutt/Santa Maria (4), Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo (3), Atascadero and Paso Robles. These stores were sold to Lucky in June, 1979. All of these stores were either remodeled and converted to the Lucky Discount Center format by Lucky; several were replaced. The sale included the original 1947 Scolaris store at 405 E. Clark in Orcutt, which was replaced by a new Lucky at Clark and Bradley in 1981.
All of the Santa Barbara/Goleta area Albertons were built by Jordanos, sold to Smiths Food King in the early 1970's, and aquired by Lucky in 1984.
Two other former Jordanos/Smiths were included in the sale, which were ultimately closed.
2) 222 N. Milpas was a Safeway. The Safeway opened in 1977, as an on site replacement for a gable Safeway which faced Montecito St. Scolari's aquired this location 8/1988. It was heavily remodeled in 2001.
3) 555 Five Cities Dr was built by Williams Bros. Markets in 1988, sold to Vons in 1991, and then to Scolaris in 1997 as a part of Vons aquisition of the former Smiths on Grand. Avenue in Grover Beach. It received new decor and flooring in 2006.
4) 2121 Spring St. was built by Scolaris in 1976, as a replacement for their store at Spring and 14th St. It was remodeled by Lucky three times, and sold to Ralphs in 1999 as a part of the FTC divistiture order. It had the early 1990's red/teal Lucky decor when Ralphs closed it in 2006. Scolaris heavily remodeled the store before reopening in June, 2007.
5) 1321 Johnson Avenue, San Luis Obispo was a new build by Scolaris in 1993. The adjacent Rite Aid is a former Safeway.

I was sure off on some of my predictions for those stores.

There was another Scolaris up until 2003 or so in Goleta, which is a Ralphs now. What did that one start as? It appears Ralphs demolished the Scolaris Store (and maybe some surrounding spaces) and built their own store. This Ralphs is much more shallow than the typical new Ralphs, but seems about as long.

That San Luis Obispo Scolaris is nothing like the new store they built in Reno in 1992 (seen here: http://s196.photobucket.com/albums/aa11 ... in%20Pkwy/

Scolaris also had some other CA Stores until the late 90s in Concoran, Hanford, and another couple spots. Those were transferred to Cost Less (which Scolari also has ownership interest in). There was another store in Arroyo Grande which it appears Scolaris operated for a while in the 90s then transferred to someone else while still retaining ownership interest who uses the name JJ's Food Company at 303 East Branch. The East Branch JJ's is closing (or may be closed now). There appears to be a second JJ's in Arroyo Grande that Scolaris does not hold ownership interest in. Further, the former Mayfair in downtown Reno, NV was operated by Scolaris for a few years with the JJ's Food Company name until its closure in 1995 for construction of the Silver Legacy casino.

The Scolari's in Goleta was built by Jordanos in 1966, sold to Smiths with the rest of Jordano's Santa Barbara area stores in the early 70's, then to Lucky in 1984, Williams Bros. in 1989, and then to Scolaris in 1991. Scolari's operated the store until the lease expired in 2002. There was a former Savon Drug next store, which had been converted to a Miller's Outpost. Ralphs demolished that entire wing of the center, and built a replacement store. It opened in fall, 2003.

At the time the San Luis Obispo store was designed and built, the CA stores and NV were different companies - Scolari's of CA and Scolari's Warehouse Markets.

The Hanford and Corcoran stores, both former Safeways, were transfered to Cost Less in 1997. The original Hanford Scolari's (Scolari's called the Valley stores Farm Boy Food Centers up until 1995 or so) was opened in a former Mayfair in the original Hanford mall around 1980, shortly after the sale of the original coast stores to Lucky. The store was then moved to the Safeway down the street. The Mayfair was demolished, along with the rest of the mall, and replaced with a strip center. The now closed Albertsons/Monte Mart sits about where the Mayfair/Scolari's did.

The original JJ's was opened at the original Scolari's at 405 E. Clark in Orcutt. Lucky built a replacement for this store, and closed the original Scolaris in 1981. After a public outcry, Scolari's agreed to operate their original store again. They could, however, not use the Scolari's name at the time.
