Post by runchadrun »

I always thought the South Pasadena store was in the location where Bristol Farms is now. The Bristol Farms sign looks like a mdified version of one of the old Market Basket signs.

The Bristol Farms at 606 S. Fair Oaks is a former Safeway. I found an article in the Times archive about a robbery in 1976.

Looks like a pylon-era store...what I am intrigued by nearby is the Orchard Supply Hardware store on the north side of the 110, it looks like it has a gable roof that got falsefronted...

2818 W Pomona, Montebello--I can't find this address. Jeff, do you know where this is?
Well, Pomona Blvd is in Monterey Park now, on the north side of the Pomona Freeway. I'm sure its under there. 2800 Block of Via Campo on the south side of the freeway (built in the 60's) is where the old bowling alley is just east of Garfield. I'm wondering since there were three Market Baskets in the area, if it kept moving. I will have to find the picture of the Monterey Park one in Prado from the 60s.

I am wondering if the original store was on Atlantic / Pomona, then moved to Garfield / Pomona then once again to Atlantic / Riggin

Also the former Albertsons in Atlantic Square was a Fazios.

That would be it. This was an independent market for a long time, and is now a blockbuster video.

This used to be an Ole's home center. It was destroyed by a fire in the 80's and rebuilt.

This building was built in the early 80's and is a Thrifty / Rite Aid store today.

Oh, that's right. The store was destroyed by arson in 1984, and the arsonist was John Orr, an arson investigator for the Glendale Fire Department. Four people died in the fire. More information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Orr

MB built a store off Ave. Vaquero in the Shorecliffs section of San Clemente back about 1963. It was the only store in South Orange County where my Dad could buy fresh scrapple. Or scrapple in any form for that matter.

It's now a DMV office, and because of that, the satellite stores in that small center still survive.

I remember they had a common feature for stores back then... a separate liquor section with its own register that was staffed by a liquor man wearing a vest. The Vons a few miles away in Capistrano Beach (now a Stat's craft store) had the same set up. I still wonder why they had to wear that vest.

The Whittier location was demolished sometime during the late 80s/early 90s. Magnolia Ave used to run through to Whittier Blvd, however when they built the new shopping center, they took out that section of road. The current shopping center has a Ralphs and a Blockbuster Video. It is across the street from Stater Bros (former Lucky's) and diagonal from the old Fred C. Nelles juvenile hall. There was also an old Union/Unocal 76 station on the corner of the Stater's lot which was torn down long ago. The closest store to where the actual Market Basket sat is a McDonald's with the address 11755 Whittier Blvd, Whittier, CA.

The Safeway store moved to the southwest corner of Monterey Road and Fair Oaks, directly across the street from the Von's. When Von's bought the LA division of Safeway the Safeway was converted to a Pavilions store. The old Safeway store was vacant for several years before the Gronsky family expanded and remodeled the store and opened it as a Bristol Farms.
