Anyone know when this thing closed and who occupied it after Safeway did? Looks surprisingly small for a gable, unless it was a "lengthwise" building like the one in Downey.

This particular Safeway was turned into a Moskatels after Safeway occupied it, then it became a Michael's. Michaels closed the store a couple years ago and it sits empty.

Right on this one...as always Jeff!

I have always liked this site...as it is set back from the street...@ somewhat of an angle.

The SAFEWAY "S" is covered with something on the left side entrance, isn't it?!

Actually, it seems like the mosaic (or possibly lighted sign) was pulled out or something, exposing an empty space behind it.

It did have a cover when it was Michaels.

If I remember correctly too, there was a side enterance to this store as well that was not used when Michaels was in.

I'm not sure if this is the same store, but the Times has an opening for a Safeway in La Mirada on Dec. 20, 1960, Imperial Hwy at Luitweiler. Can't find Luitweiler in any map. Anyone have an address for this location?

I found a legal document at http://online.ceb.com/calcases/CA2/162CA2d491.htm referring to Luitweiler Ave. as being in an unincorporated portion of LA County in 1958. Looks as though La Mirada was incorporated in 1960, perhaps shortly thereafter they came up with the name of La Mirada Blvd. Sounds like a good theory anyway!

I have a 1955 Auto Club of Southern Cal's Whittier-Norwalk map (photocopy). Luitweiler Road is in fact the old name for La Mirada Blvd. This is before LA County Public Works designated La Mirada and Colima as County Highway N8. Much of the South Whittier/La Mirada was unincorporated LA County until the early 1960's.

Site has been completely demolished...nothing is left.
