Just saw this photo in some guy's collection of Washington, DC area shots:

Probably would find the answer on DCGrocery somewhere...interesting 1970s thin white lettering on what appears to be a 1980s-era facade.
Here's another Virginia-area curiosity with 1970s lettering:

A 1970s era store soon to be rebuilt:

Just got that one identified through another search, it's on Columbia Pike in Arlington:

edit, october 1: Here's a store in Winchester, VA that closed in 1998, wonder if there are any other photos of it.

Virginia Safeways: not sure where

Re: Virginia Safeways: 2303 Columbia Pike, Arlington
A Safeway store used to stand at or about 2303 Columbia Pike in Arlington, Virginia. I visited that store in February 1990. I'm not sure when it closed, but Google Street View shows that the site had been cleared for new construction by November 2007. My recollection is that it was a relatively small store. A portion of Columbia Pike had a reversible lane for commute hours back in 1990. I don't think that Safeway built a "replacement store" on the some site or nearby.
