Sacramento, California’s state capital, has been a thriving retail area almost from the beginning. In the twentieth century, it was served by such names as Skaggs Stores (later Safeway), Martha Washington Stores, Cardinal Stores (later absorbed by Lucky Stores), Albertsons, Mayfair Markets, Purity Stores, Raley’s, Bel-Air, and more.
