Winnipeg is a fascinating place to study chain supermarket history. Aside from is own homegrown early chains, such as Neal’s, Jewel, and Shop-Easy, Winnipeg is one of the few places where A&P, Safeway, Loblaw’s, and Dominion operated simultaneously (the other, I think, being Southern Ontario in the 1970s and early 1980s). Photos and more history to follow.
This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Winnipeg between 1930 and 1985, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

December 2, 2019 at 5:08amThe Safeway store at 1081 Ellice Avenue in Winnipeg apparently closed in 2008. Here is a Google Street View from Sept. 2007:

As another user noted in 2010 elsewhere on this message board, a longtime customer of that Safeway store shot video circa 2008 of the building’s final days as a Safeway store and even recorded the removal of the “SAFEWAY” letters from the large pylon sign in the parking lot.
