Rochester (New York) Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1925-2005

This is a list of all known chain grocery addresses in and around Rochester NY between 1925 and 2005, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. It is generated through a live Google Spreadsheet so it reflects the latest information I have.

Access and download the location spreadsheet via Google Sheets.

Interesting notes:

  • Hart’s stores began opening supermarkets under the Star Super Markets name in 1940. The first was at 685 South Avenue (in a former A&P). The two chains operated simultaneously until the late 1960s.
  • Cities listed in the spreadsheet reflect the mailing address for Google Maps integration, so locations in Greece and Gates, for example, display as “Rochester.”
  • I have tried to use the directional conventions currently in use, which is difficult in Rochester, so “North Clinton Avenue” but “Winton Road North.”

Store tags:

  • A&P
  • Acme/Super Saver
  • Bells
  • Hart’s
  • IGA
  • Kroger
  • Loblaws/Century
  • Red & White
  • Star
  • Super Duper
  • Tops
  • Wegmans

For Wegmans at 525 Titus Ave, they built a new building on the site of the old Sibley’s. Where Bells was is now Big Lots.
