Hartford Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1925-1985

This is a list of all known chain grocery addresses in Hartford between 1925 and 1985 (plus suburban locations from different periods) complied from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. It is generated through a live Google Spreadsheet so it reflects the latest information I have. You may view the list in the frame below or open it in a new window, which will give you more viewing options and the ability to download it or add it to your own Google Drive.

  • The list below has three tabs, one for Hartford proper, one for East Hartford and the eastern suburbs, and one for West Hartford and the western suburbs. I have included all the data I have access to.
  • I have found that the Google Maps links do not work well due to the street names that repeat in so many suburbs; even addresses that are correct and current sometimes display incorrectly. Main Street and Farmington Avenue are particularly problematic. I cannot fix this. I am sorry.
  • Two separate chains bearing the “Economy” name operated in Hartford; one became First National and the other became Stop & Shop.
