Hartford West Suburbs Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1925-1983

This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Hartford’s western suburbs between 1925 and 1983 compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes:

  • I have found that the Google Maps links do not work well due to the street names that repeat in so many suburbs; even addresses that are correct and current sometimes display incorrectly. Main Street and Farmington Avenue are particularly problematic. I cannot fix this. I am sorry.
  • Two separate chains bearing the “Economy” name operated in Hartford; one became First National and the other became Stop & Shop.

Store tags:

  • A&P
  • First National/Finast
  • Grand Union
  • Mott’s
  • Shop-Rite
  • Stop & Shop
