Portland (Maine) Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1925-1964

This is a list of all known chain grocery addresses in Portland between 1925 and 1964, complied from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. It is generated through a live Google Spreadsheet so it reflects the latest information I have.

Access and download the location spreadsheet via Google Sheets.

Notes:

  • The George Shaw stores became Shaw’s Suermarkets.
  • The listing for Hannaford Brothers refers to their wholesale operation, which supplied Red & White franchisees throughout Maine. I’m not 100% certain how their retail operations, which apparently began in 1944, were originally branded. This may be data that is not included here because it was displayed elsewhere in the directory, or these may be some of the Red & White stores that are not co-branded.

Store tags:

  • A&P
  • First National
  • Hannaford
  • IGA
  • Red & White
