I’ve been inside that Penn Fruit/Thriftway many times. It does have the looks of a Penn Fruit company store.

That was some roadtrip. Perfect weather. Great shots of the Holiday Thriftway.

Sadly more A&P, Pathmark, SuperFresh and Waldbaums locations are either closing or being sold as I type this.

Another excuse for a road trip in the future. Best of everything to you.

Rarely does that design – the wall of glass with an arc-shaped roof – exist anymore, and I think it’s for security reasons as much as anything else. The old Bazaar of All Nations, a precursor to shopping malls in Clifton Heights, PA, was replacing its glass panes with opaque panels over 20 years ago due to rocks being thrown through them. But it seems the old structures have found a modern following with some fitness clubs, who enjoy showing off their sweaty customers on ellipticals to passersby. I guess no one wants to break in to gyms. A Bally’s location in Woodlyn, PA, is in a former market building that resembles this one. I couldn’t remember what it was before, but a kind soul anonymously posted this info on amesfanclub.com. It was an Acme Market. Incidentally, the Burlington Coat Factory the poster references is next to the site of the former Bazaar of All Nations, now a Home Depot.

Since nobody ever posted anything else on here, I’ll list certain former Penn Fruits and the stores they have become:

Springfield, PA: Channel (closed before Rickel’s took over) then divided into Staples and Golf Augusta Pro Shops. The latter has since closed, then became the Springfield Golf & Training Center. This store also closed and is still vacant.

Clifton Heights, PA: Burlington Coat Factory

    Glenolden, PA: Pep Boys

Woodlyn, PA: Acme, now Bally Total Fitness

Philadelphia, PA: Acme, now Ross Dress for Less

There is a former “Centennial/Colonial” A&P in Penndel, PA that is now a Bottom Dollar Food store.

This was a Penn fruit at one time.. It was a high volume store at Bridge and Pratt st. in northeast Phila. It was an easy walk from the el stop to the store. It was not one of the 17 stores Food Fair took. I know because I worked in Market Research with Penn fruit for 12 years and later with Food Fair for 2 years.
