There was during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s a KROGER FAMILY CENTER that was located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina that was more larger and typical than the regular Kroger stores of that period that was approximately 70,000 square feet. This typical store had a full service Delicatessen/Bakery, Floral Department, Pharmacy, Snack Bar, Garden Center and on the opposite end of the store a Auto and Tire Center. One side was the grocery section and the other side was retail. There were several KROGER FAMILY CENTER stores in North Carolina with locations in Greensboro, Winston-Salem, Burlington and Cary.

There’s been a good bit of discussion about Kroger Family Centers on the message board and I recently posted about the one in Chapel Hill.

I’m not aware of there having been Family Centers in Greensboro in Winston-Salem. Do you know where these would have been located? I do know that Kroger bought the A&P-owned Family MART locations in both these cities in 1987. Those were large-format stores opened by A&P in the late 1970s/early 1980s that also had a good bit of general merchandise.
