Re: Defunct grocery chains you personally shopped at

Here in Arkansas: Harvest Foods (the first one that was formed by the group of investers who bought all the Safeway stores and serviced by Affiliated Foods, that went bankrupt) Food 4 Less Skaggs Albertson's Safeway (I know it still exists but not in Arkansas so to me its defunct) Piggly Wiggly Mad ...

Re: Safeway Store Brands

I was in a flea market last weekend in Muskogee, OK.....there were four quart-size glass Cragmont bottles....but no mention of Safeway. Embossed on the necks of the bottles was "Marlboro" and the labels were Cragmont brand.....made by Marlboro Beverage Company in California. Later version...

Re: Safeway in Arkansas

I'd be willing to bet they did not operate at the same time. Safeway was notorious for replacing stores in some cases with brand new ones almost right next door A few days ago, I was going through an old trunk at my Dad's house and ran accross a 1984 SW Bell phone book. I thought, what the heck, I a...

Re: Safeway in Arkansas

I found an article in the Arkansas Times that confirms that old blue building at 12th and Ceder in Little Rock was a Safeway. The article is about the Police Dept. wanting to make it a substation but in the first paragraph it specifically states the old store was a Safeway. Here is a link to the sto...

Re: Woolco

My first job out of high school was at Woolco's in the McCain shopping center across from McCain Mall in North Little Rock. I worked there for a couple of months in 79. I worked part time as a stock boy. It had the Red Grill which I had to clean every Wednesday. I also remember on payday they didn't...

Re: Original Safeway Interiors in Colorado?

Thanks for the info. I also didn't know there were Safeways in Nebraska. If I do make a trip, Nebraska would be closer and I would rather see the old interior. Not really interested in the new stuff. Going to google Safeway Nebraska and see what I come up with. Thanks again.

Re: Safeway in Arkansas

Thanks guys. You are probably right about this being an old independent. I can't recall anything specifically about this store being a Safeway, just some sort of feeling I am having. When I go down there, I will go by a get a picture anyway and if it is still a thrift store I will go in Maybe someon...

Kroger in England, AR

Growing up in Arkansas there was really only 2 grocery store chains, Safeway and Kroger. I was Googling Kroger when I came upon this strange looking store in England, AR. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=301+Pine+Bluff+Hwy,+England,+AR&sll=40.69686,-74....

Re: Safeway, Charlottesville, 1972

I saw that building too and I am having a hard time imagining it as a Safeway store. With all the garage doors and the odd shape I wonder if it could have been a distribution center. Part of the building looks like a freezer. There is a railroad track running along the southside of the building. I w...

Original Safeway Interiors in Colorado?

Does anyone know if there are any Safeway's in Colorado that still use the old interiors? Any marinas? The reason I ask is that I believe the nearest Safeway to me is in Denver. (I live in Clarksville, AR) I would love some photos of the old stores because those are the ones I grew up going to. Than...

Re: Recently closed marina Safeway in Olympia

That is really sad. To tear down fairly new stores. To me at least, since I haven't stepped into a Safeway since 1985 before I joined the Navy. When I got back in 92 Safeway had already sold out in Arkansas. I appreciate the photos, especially of the interior.

Re: Safeway in Arkansas

Wow! I didn't know safeway was in Little Rock way back then. Thanks for letting me know. I thought Safeway didn't come into the state until sometime in the 50's because all I saw growing up were the stores built in the 50's and later. Since I am only 47 and don't remember the 20's or 30's I wonder i...
