Re: A&P, 1999

Those 'Fast Lane' signs were used in A&Ps Canadian stores in the same era, except they were red & white. My store had them. However, no Canadian stores ever looked like the photos above, but that was also shortly before the US side of the business started adopting more Canadian A&P pract...

Re: Off to Canada

Hi Groceteria, not sure if you left yet on your trip. For Ottawa, 2 stores worth visiting are the Loblaws at Elmvale Acres Shopping Centre (St. Laurent Blvd.). This store is still in the early 90s Loblaws scheme - grey with yellow cash registers. It's also an old Steinberg's and still has a car orde...

Re: 5915 Yonge, North York ON

I just drove up Yonge the other night. The store appears to have a conventional roofline now. :( This store also looks a lot like a Ralphs (I think on Ventura Blvd.) I've seen in a book on Googie architecture, probably written by Alan Hess. The Food Basics logo is slightly different now, too, but y...

Re: 5915 Yonge, North York ON

Ugh....What they did to the old arched Metro (late 1950s Grand Union....which was a Miracle Mart by the 70s and 80s) is GOD AWFUL. See the Metro store at the link below. The beautiful arch has been smothered by postmodern guck. http://g.co/maps/pgygj It used to look like this Metro (ne Grand Union)...

Re: Older McDonald's Locations

The La Habra CA McDonald's on Whittier Boulevard near Harbor Boulevard is an older site. Older in that it was built before drive-thrus were the norm. The drive-thru was added to the side of the building...yet it is far from the kitchen. I believe the restrooms are in between. So, to get the food to...

Re: Those little roller-coaster things groceries traveled on

Someone mentioned the Star Market at Porter Square in Cambridge, MA. That store WAS remodeled a couple of years ago but I don't know if they have a conveyor system. One store that may still have one is the Shaw's (now Star Market) on Commonwealth Ave in Allston, MA (Boston). Let me first say that t...

That store is still there today at Yonge and Sheppard. It's now a Metro (ex-Dominion).

This store was opened as a Steinberg's. I've seen a photo of it on flickr.

Re: Those little roller-coaster things groceries traveled on

There's a small grocery chain in Ohio called Buehler's with about a dozen stores that offers 'Load and Go' parcel pickup service at every single one of its stores. http://buehlers.com/ - In the internet age, parcel pickup allows this company to create a simple system for online shopping (they have i...

Dominion Name Starts to Disappear in Ontario

This past weekend marked the conversion of the first 6 Dominion Stores to be converted to Metro. I can't believe Metro is getting rid of an iconic name. By the end of the year, the Dominion name will be gone in Ontario. By the end of 2009, the A&P, Loeb, The Barn and Ultra Food & Drug banner...

Re: Number plates on shopping carts

A lot of stores used the numbers as a part of their parcel pickup scheme. The cashier would write the cart number on the receipt and the customer would drive up and claim her groceries with it. And then (dramatic pause) they'd load the groceries into her car for her... It's been a long time since I...

Re: Those little roller-coaster things groceries traveled on

Nice photos. There were also versions with wheels similar (identical) to metal roller skates. There would be several in each row. Those things made a ringing noise like a choir of bells. A train wreck of a choir, but... Do you mean rollers like these: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chrismrichards/218...

Re: Those little roller-coaster things groceries traveled on

The parcel pickup (also known as car order or in Quebec 'Commande à l'auto'), only began to disappear in Ontario & Quebec en-masse in the mid-1990s. There are still a few old stores that have them. 1 Loblaws here in Ottawa still has parcel pickup and 1 other ex-Loblaws, shown in this pic: http:/...

A handful of stores still use the numbered plastic bin / conveyor belt system of parcel pickup. Here in Ottawa, 2 of the oldest Loblaws stores still do this. Here's an example at an A&P in Picton, Ontario: http://www.flickr.com/photos/78111739@N00/1142687126/ Here's another A&P in Kingston, ...
