Re: A&P in New Hampshire

If you're interested in the truly oddball A&Ps that stayed open way past their prime in Northern New England, then you must investigate the outrageously ancient and crappy A&P that was open into the mid 1990s in Greenville ME. I point blank asked the manager of that store why they kept his s...

Re: A&P in New Hampshire

I don't think there was a store in Franklin until 1997. The Franklin store was in a very old downtown building; it closed when the new store in Tilton (just a mile down the road) opened in the 70s. I believe Tilton remained open until the late nineties. I was working as a manager for Kraft Foods at...

Re: A&P in New Hampshire

Well, the Peterborough store was the last to close -- it stayed open WAY longer than it should have, but only because the town fathers refused to allow any new development. That kept all competition out. Do a simple google search on A&P Peterborough and you'll probably come up with some data poi...

Re: Acme in New York

There was an Acme store located in Grand Central Plaza in Horseheads, NY. It was an older store with a barrel roof. As I remember, it was not at all busy. The Acme was open in the early 80s, when I lived in Elmira. I left Elmira in 1984 and the store was still operating. This one closed, I think, s...

Re: Safeway in NC

Safeway had four stores in NC: The Outer Banks, Rocky Mount, Roanoke Rapids, and Goldsboro (if memory serves). Even the most casual observer can't help but note that is a cobbling together of unlikely small cities. I well remember the Safeway Richmond District and I shopped in several of their stor...

Re: Acme in New York

Acme was still in NY during the 80's. I was working for Kraft Foods in Central PA and in this area of NY state as late as 1994 and these ACME stores were all open then. Off the top of my head, I can remember Pen Yan, Hornell, Bath, and Watkins Glen.... all in NY state. All of them, at that point, w...

Re: Acme in Virginia

Hi, Just how do you define the lower tier of New York State ? I didn't refer to it as the lower tier of NY state. I referred to it as the Southern Tier of NY State. This area has forever been known as the Southern Tier of NY. So much so, that the SOUTHERN TIER EXPRESSWAY is the very name of the sta...

Re: Acme in Virginia

And a link to a very old photo of the Acme in Wellsboro PA. (This is very close to the NY state line in north central PA -- and, honestly, in the middle of NO WHERE!!)

Re: Acme in Virginia

I found a link to a recent photo of the former Acme in Bath NY. (Looks like it converted for a short time to a P&C and was shuttered shortly thereafter.)

Re: Acme in Virginia

Acme had stores in New York state, at least in western/central NY, but closed them all in 1979. Actually, not quite so. Acme absolutely had stores along the Southern Tier of NY State through at least the mid 1990s. I was working for Kraft Foods back then and handled Acme stores in: Cornell, Bath, a...

Re: Ithaca (Lansing) New York former A&P

In the late 1990s, I visited the A&P stores in Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake, and Plattsburgh often with my job. The Sarancac and Tupper Lake stores felt very 1972ish to me, while the Plattsburgh store felt more like 1958! The Plattsburgh store was oddly dark and felt ancient. The strip plaza it was...

Re: A VA/WV-area Acme Markets chain?

State of West Virginia: Berkley and jefferson Counties Well, now things are beginning to make a little more sense. These two easternmost counties in WV are, effectively, a part of the greater DC market. With stores apparently in the Northern VA and Central MD areas at one time (anyone know when?), ...

I'm not trying to interject any animosity into these wonderful historical boards. I am trying to ensure that what I post here is fully accurate . One of the most frustrating things about web bulletin boards is that "information" gets tossed out as declarative fact and that can really lead ...

Re: Acme Markets Of West Va

Acme Markets of Philadelphia had stores in West Va and in Va until the early 1980!s as part of its Baltimore Division. There may well have been PHL Acme stores in Delmarva, at some point. However, it sounds as if the claim above is stating that ACME was also in Appalachia and WV! I have tremendous ...
