Re: Frys Food AZ: Older interiors

The interiors of the older Marketplace stores (ex-Smitty's/Fred Meyer) have been redone to match the new-built Fry's Marketplace stores - earthy tones and southwestern design. Fry's has no pre 80s stores in operation, so no such interiors exist. The rest have gone to the Kroger generic designs. I ha...

Re: Bob's Big Boy former L.A. locations

Phoenix had probably one of the only Native American-themed Bob's Big Boys - at the Northeast corner of Central and Thomas (Central Ave was the "cruiser" corridor in the 50s and 60s). It was a low slung stone building with turquoise-colored panels covered with Navajo motifs. Out here Bob's...

Re: Old JC Penney's ad

Penney was primarily a soft goods chain - and did not have a catalog - until the ealy 60s, when they introduced Penncrest appliances, tv, and auto supplies. This happened around the time of the introduction of the ribbony "Penneys" logo. When they dropped hard goods in the mid 80s, JCP wen...

Re: Supermarkets in the Movies and TV

Caught a bit of cable channel TLCs LITTLE PEOPLE BIG WORLD show this week. The family went grocery shopping for Christmas dinner in a LIFESTYLED SAFEWAY-owned store. Couldn't tell if a true Safeway...or a Safeway-owned chain...as they all look the same! They live in Oregon, so it probably is a Safe...

Re: Supermarket jingles

Until the 80s Safeway used different jingles in each of their divisions...In Phoenix they used "Go for it at Safeway" and "Since we're neighbors let's be friends-Safeway" we also had Alpha Beta with "Tell-A-Friend"....which became "ABCO-a new way to say Alpha Beta&...

Re: 1960's Washington DC Safeway Picture

I believe Safeway "officially" stopped using the Roman-style lettering, around 1955, when the circle-S and the sans-serif font came into use. It is strange to see both on the same building.

Re: old store brands

Another now extinct chain (or will soon be when their final store in Hollywood officially becomes a Gelson's in a couple of weeks) was Mayfair Markets. Their house brand was "mayfresh". Mayfair switched to Springfield in the few years before they went kaput. El Rancho, which was Mayfair's...

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise

Remember Burry's cookies? They seemed to be a major brand in the 60s and 70s (Scooter Pies, Gauchos, etc) when they were owned by Quaker. Then for some reason Quaker sold Burry to a French company that didn't know how to market and the Burry brand disappeared from the shelves - yet some of the cooki...

Old Dairy Queen signs

I've notice on my travels that there a number of Dairy Queens that still sport the older block letter signage (before the adoption of the red "kiss" logo in the mid-60s). Examples are a store in Williams AZ using a blue circle with white DAIRY QUEEN and a big ol' cone sticking out of the s...

Re: Extinct Supermarket Merchandise

Hamm's was bought out by Olympia, who itself was bought by Pabst. Pabst then sold the brand along with several breweries to Miller, who now sells Hamm's in only a handful of cities.

Re: BUFFUMS--Southern California

But remember that merger mania is nothing new.
Broadway in Southern CA absorbed B.H. Dyas (Hollywood), Coulter's (LA - Wilshire), Marston's (San Diego area), and Milliron's (LA - Westchester) before 1970.
And also Korrick's in Phoenix (mid 1960s)

Re: Toy Chains

In the Southwest (AZ-NM-TX) we had Toys By Roy, which were rather large toy and hobby stores mostly in malls -the had good sized hobby depts. I believe KB bought them out in the 80s.

Re: 1960s Phillips 66 stations

Most of the Phillips 66 stations in California were originally Flying A stations, Phillips bought the West Coast operations of Tidewater-Associated Oil (Flying A) in 1966. Many of the Flying A's included angular design that was similar to Phillips.

Re:

Yes--all the generics worked this way. "Scotch Buy" was around (on a small number of items" into the 90s, along side all the usual safeway brands. They seemed to phase it out around the time they brought in "Safeway Select". The generics were okay for canned goods and other...

Re: Phoenix Area Gemco stores

The 19th @ Glendale Gemco was torn down and replaced by a Smitty's (they used a lot of Spanish tile on their stores) Smitty's became Fred Meyer Mktplace, then Fry's Mktplace
