Hi all. If we could keep the specific Memco locations posts in that thread and reserve this one for general info, as mentioned earlier, that would be great. Thanks. Here's the link to the locations thread: http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=1215 I'm moving some of the locations posts th...

Re: Northwest Davis Nugget
I believe that the store opened as a Fry's, but I don't know that it was ever anything else (other than a Safeway.) If it started as a Fry's, could it have been one of the ones that was sold to Save-Mart? I think all the NorCal stores were sold in that 1988 deal. I also think Save-Mart sold (or tra...

Re: A+P-110 Washington St., Morristown, NJ
That leads me to believe that this store was retrofitted in the colonial style albeit when they were building them that way in the 50's and 60's. Is that a possibility? I've actually seen several that seem to have been retrofitted that way. I'm guessing that most of them were late 1940s and early 1...

Isn't this area part of the whole Japantown/Western Addition redevelopment zone, around where Geary runs as an expressway? Yeah. Webster is one of the streets that was widened. If you go a few blocks south of the Safeway, you'll see old buildings still standing on one side and nothing on the other ...

I've started a new thread on the Webster Street Safeway in SF because I think it's worthy of discussion on its own:

We can continue on with the other Farmer's locations here.

Safeway, 1335 Webster, San Francisco
http://www.groceteria.com/sanfrancisco/gallery-current/images/24.jpg Moved from another thread : As for the Webster Street Safeway, I got an email a few days ago from a former Safeway employee that claimed it was never a Brentwood but a 1980s original Safeway. But I suspect it may have received a n...

Re: Farmers locations
1755 Geary Blvd., San Francisco, CA. This seems to be the location of the current Safeway at 1335 Webster. The current structure was built in 1983, per the city of San Francisco, and was supposedly a Mayfair, then a Brentwood, before being taken over by Safeway when Brentwood was acquired about 198...

High Point NC
There's been a flurry of activity lately as I try to get lots done before I start grad school (and hopefully a somewhat full-time job) soon. As of tonight, I've posted the new section on High Point NC, the second third of the Piedmont Triad area. High Point is a smaller city, and the section reflect...

Re: Gene Compton's Cafateria
I never see places like this anymore, no matter where I've traveled. The closest living relative seems to be the (real) vintage diner, and those are much more common in the east than around San Francisco. Actually, cafeterias are still very common and often thriving in much of the southeast. Of cou...

OK, now it's completely done with 96 photos, many of them vintage, and all. Everything has been rewritten from top to bottom, and researched as intensively as the Charlotte section from last year. I'm rather proud of it, Greensboro being my hometown and all:

I am positive the independent grocer is a former Safeway. It may have been for a short period. Agreed. There were several instances in the late 1960s of Safeway replacing stores less than ten years old, especially in smaller towns. There's even an article on that subject (specifically in Pacific Gr...

I might as well post this link here, since now it's on topic... a website which I've been working on for the past 8 months or so, at http://rimes12.tripod.com which is a compilation of addresses in Downriver through the years, both commercial and residential. Interesting stuff. I am impressed, and ...
