Re: MONTGOMERY WARDS STILL ALIVE

As far as I can tell, the Rosemead Target was also a complete teardown/rebuild of the Wards. And the one in Covina (across from Eastland, which is in West Covina) was torn down and the location now houses an IKEA (relocated from Puente Hills--the former STOR.) The Wards in Country Club Centre in Sac...

Temple City Former Albertson's

The former Albertson's in Temple City (Rosemead and Las Tunas) mentioned here http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtop ... emple+City closed a while back, and is now in the process of becoming a Super A Market.

Re: Gottschalks

The Sunrise Mall former Weinstocks is now one of two Macy's in that mall. The other is the former Liberty House. Originally, Macy's had no stores in Sunrise Mall (the original anchors were Weinstocks, Liberty House, JCPenney and Sears) but built a new store across the street in what was first called...

Re: Former Lucky-Monrovia

Just got a flyer in the mail for Henry's-Monrovia grand opening on 6/17. It says that the store is only 25,000 square feet, and implies that most of their stores are of a similar small (in comparison to most supermarkets today) size. I don't know how large the Lucky store was-- I'm thinking it was a...

Re: Former Lucky-Monrovia

That Lucky was only briefly an Albertsons. Remember, the Albertsons, former Lucky on Huntington in Duarte to the east was a former Kmart. Jeff-- the Lucky I'm referring to was never an Albertsons (at least it hasn't been one since 1987, when I moved to the area). The former KMart (in Monrovia, not ...

Former Lucky-Monrovia

The former Lucky store at the western end of Huntington Dr. in Monrovia (not the one that replaced it--a Lucky-Sav-On that's now an Albertson's) has been vacant for around 10 years. I drove by yesterday and noticed that a Henry's Farmers Market is being built on that site. I couldn't tell if they'd ...

Re: Ralphs/Loray Market/Northern California in the 1970s

The only Loray (or LoRay?) I remember was in Walnut Creek (I think.) The Ralphs mentioned above in the Santa Clara County area were, if I recall correctly, part of the Gold Circle expansion into California. The stores were all new builds, and contained both a Ralphs and a Gold Circle. They also buil...

Re: Gottschalks

IIRC, Gottschalks and Macy's also swapped stores at the Fashion Faire Mall in Modesto, CA.
Modesto's mall is Vintage Fair.

Re: the BROADWAY

Don't forget downtown L.A. (Broadway Plaza)-Became Macy's (Macy's Plaza.) And there were stores in Bakersfield, the San Diego area, Arizona, New Mexico, and Las Vegas at one time (not to mention the big store in Hollywood that closed down many years ago.) Weren't they also in Thousand Oaks, Palm Des...

Re: Chveron Stations Operating as Standard Oil

There's a Standard station in Las Vegas, on Tropicana just west of I-15. It has the newest Chevron logo, but with "Standard" (in the current Chevron font) on the signs where Chevron would normally be placed. I wonder if there's a requirement that they have at least one legacy Standard-bran...

Re: Original Jack in the Box sites

The location on Mt. Diablo Blvd. in Lafayette, CA (Contra Costa Co.) was definitely there in the late '60s. It (along with Taco Bell) was our 'go to" fast food place when I was in high school back then. (There were no McDonald's, Wendy's or BKs around in those days.) I'm sure the building has b...

Re: Rancho Cucamonga, CA chain drug store history

I always wondered why it said "Garfield Beach" on my credit card statements for CVS purchases. Does anyone know the origin of this name? Both Garfield (Ave.) and Beach (Blvd.) are major thoroughfares in LA and Orange counties, but they don't intersect.

Re: Vons Locations, 1967

I believe the Duarte Big Lots may have been a Vons also. When I moved there in 1987, it was already a Pic'n'Save, but I believe there was a Vons labelscar either on the building or on the shopping center signage. Vons also owned a Pantry store just down the road a bit; perhaps their acquisition of t...

Re: NORMS acquired Steak Corral site in West Covina

I've tried going to the new West Covina location three times since it opened and all three times there were lines of people outside the door waiting to get in. They even had to set up plastic chairs outdoors to accommodate the overflow. I guess it's the "new kid in town" for now; I'm sure ...

Re: Former Boston Market locations in your area

The Boston Market in Duarte (CA) began life as a Wendy's, then became Boston Market, then sat empty for a long time, and now is an Alberto's Mexican restaurant (that always seems to be on the verge of closing as well.) It was strange to have a Boston Market with a drive-through lane (that was built ...
