Re: Dominion Square - Culpeper, VA

I'm almost certain it's an A&P variant that probably last operated as a SuperFresh (and maybe opened as one). I would agree with SuperFresh, and possibly even Sav-A-Center later in life... both used kelly green as their primary colors, both were A&P stores, and the facade is very characteri...

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....

Just a little late-night musing... Alternate history: In 1986, Lucky Stores spun off it's GEMCO division. As a new company, GEMCO struggled to find its place in the late 80's discount arena. After closing all but their California stores in 1989, GEMCO went on a massive rebranding campaign, focusing ...

Re: If you could bring a defunct store back.....

Being from Southern California I would probably bring back Thriftimart with the giant T on the side of the building, and definetly GEMCO that was a great place to shop. I agree with GEMCO. During my tenure in Michigan, I learned the value of a well-run supercenter (Meijer). I think it's time Southe...

Re: 7-Eleven Stores (1980-Prior)

There's a 7-Eleven store at 1475 Melrose Avenue, Chula Vista, CA that has the old trapezoidal street sign, though with a newer logo inserted. I took a picture of the sign some time back:

Re: Second Bar Code on Coupons

Has anyone else noticed that coupons (e.g., coupons clipped out of the Sunday newspaper) now have two bar codes on them? For at least twenty years (I guess), coupons have included Universal Price Codes. Now they have a second bar code, one that is apparently called a "GS1 DataBar." Does a...

Re: Ohrbach's Department Store

IIRC, the mall was flanked by Robinson's, Sears, Nordstroms and The Broadway. Macy's was The Broadway store, and I believe the new Nordstroms site is the old Robinson's, and the current Nordstroms has been there since 1981. Los Cerritos Center never had a May Company store. Los Cerritos never had a...

Re: Smith's Food King in Socal--with store locations

For the purposes of this post, I'm talking about the first entry of Smith's Food King in Southern California, not the short-lived reentry in the 1990s. ... snip ... Valley View at Lincoln, Buena Park--I'm guessing it's the Big Lots http://local.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&cp=pn4xv054y0s6&styl...

Does the old Broadway turned Macy*s still look the same?

Thanks!
Hmmm, according to the Bing Maps view, it does, but I'm not sure how old the image is, and I haven't been up to Cerritos in years :)

Re: Ohrbach's Department Store

We all knew it couldnt last forever, but at least it lasted 23 years after OHRBACHS closed. So true! Now, at the other end was May Company, correct? Taller building with big 'ol hanging/swooping lights, correct?! Does it still look the same?! Macy*s now? I never stepped foot into that mall...yet, d...

Re: Ohrbach's Department Store

Ah, the old Cerritos store reopened today as a FOREVER XXI and it looks awful. Goodbye to the old brickwork outside and now it looks like an aluminum hull. I have to see it in person. They have some pictures of it in hte OC Register. http://www.ocregister.com/articles/store-230649-big-unveils.html?...

Re: Kmart Australia store design

Kmart Australia started in 1969 as a partnership between Coles and Kmart Corp. In 1979, Coles acquired full control, and in 1992 bought out all remaining stock that Kmart Corp had. That aside, I would assume the '68-'79 period likely shared similar decor. After that, it's likely Coles started puttin...
