Re: Farmer Jack in Utah
Well, I was mostly asking about Salt Lake City. I'm pretty sure that Nampa and/or Caldwell were later sold to Paul's, an independent supermarket that Albertsons bought out in the mid-2010s. I'll have to check and see where they were and which ones closed. When SuperValu sold the Salt Lake City-area...

Re: Farmer Jack in Utah
Safeway had already left Boise proper by this point. I know of two locations that continued as supermarkets: Overland and Vista continued as Albertsons for many years, until a new store was built adjacent to the site. Also, on Cole Road, Waremart operated a store for a number of years, although I a...

Farmer Jack in Utah
There's very little about what I can find about Borman's short-lived entry into Utah. From what I can tell, they bought the Salt Lake City division of Safeway in 1987 - https://apnews.com/article/21c75005125b9f52306b8f1dba0afbbd - and ended up selling them off in early 1988, shortly before the entir...

Montgomery Ward 1999 closures
In January 1999, Montgomery Ward closed 39 stores and several more Auto Express locations, but I can't find a list anywhere and my Google-fu is failing me. It's especially frustrating as I know I've seen a list before in the last few years and my hometown Montgomery Ward (Bryan) was on the 1999 clos...

Doesn't actually seem to be up, the Google Spreadsheet embedded and linked still ends in 1959.

Fazio's Discount Drug
For several years now, I was aware that there was a sort of discount department store that closed around 2001 called Fazio's in Dallas, not to be confused with Fazio's of Cleveland, the same Fazio's/Fisher Foods that owned Dominick's for a while, bought and rebranded the A&P stores in SoCal for ...

Food 4 Less & Fleming Cos./Food 4 Less history
There's a former mall (de-malled in the early 2000s) in my town, Manor East Mall (the DeadMalls.com entry was written a long time ago by me and frankly I'm embarrassed that it's so amateurish). In the late 1980s it featured a Food 4 Less store, and according to tax records, was owned by Falley's Inc...

Re: List of Detroit area Kroger stores in 1984
I remember that Packard Road Kroger, by summer 2010 it had removed its signage, was fenced off, and looked like it hadn't served as anything in years. By 1990, Kroger had 12% of the market in Detroit (compared to 33% independents and 30% of the combined A&P/Farmer Jack stores) which is very low ...

Re: List of Detroit area Kroger stores in 1984
Kroger does have a Detroit division located in Novi today, with 70 stores removed from the division (in the early 1980s), what other stores did the Kroger division support? Did they just run a division with extremely low numbers like Albertsons' Florida operation before they reopened the stores?

Re: Kroger in Cleveland
A post on RetailWatchers mentions that Kroger "tried out multiple concepts in Cleveland for a decade before they left the market" but it doesn't mention what they were. What happened in Cleveland toward the end?

Re: NEW: Austin TX, 1924-1986
I believe that I mentioned this in another thread, but the biggest changes that happened between 1986 and the present are these: - Tom Thumb sells about half of their stores to Albertsons (the better half, including a store under construction) - Skaggs Alpha Beta becomes Jewel-Osco in 1991, which be...

Was "Skaggs Alpha Beta" used in California?
Let me get this straight regarding the history of Alpha Beta, just so I'm covering all the bases: From what I gather from Wikipedia and other sources, Alpha Beta from the early 1960s to the late 1970s was owned by pre-Skaggs American Stores and was basically the West Coast counterpart to ACME and sh...

Re: Comprehensive list of Kmart locations
I'll have to look it up again, but I'm pretty sure that for American Fare, the store was closed and renovated into a traditional Kmart, while the grocery side became Cub Foods (which operated in Georgia under a franchise). I'm not sure when they closed. An article I found mentioned the GA Cub Foods ...
