Re: Thrifty Junior Drug Stores

Chad, see if you can find anything about an Albertsons that opened on Imperial Hwy at Rose Dr. Its now a Stater Bros. In that small center, there is a tiny CVS that once had to have been a Sav-on Express. Question is, when did the center open? I beleive it had to have had opened after or about the ...

Re: Thrifty Junior Drug Stores

According to a 1986 Times article there were 27 Thrifty Jr stores. This was when Pacific Lighting (parent of Socal Gas Company) bought the chain. Later that year Thrifty bought Drug King (15 stores) and Guild Drugs (13 stores) and converted most of them into Thrifty Jr. There were also a few Thrifty...

Re: Original Jack in the Box sites

Apparently in the 80's after getting rid of the "clown", the company changed some of its stores to "Monterey Jack's". I don't remember that here in CA. It didn't work out well and they changed them back by 1986. That's all I can find about it. Monterey Jack's was test marketed w...

Re: Circuit City to Liquidate remaining 500 stores.

Just a reminder to keep the history of the chain as the topic of conversation. Here in Socal, many of the first Circuit City stores were former Akron stores. The Pasadena, West LA (on Sepulveda and National, now closed) and Granada Hills stores come to mind as former Akrons. The Granada Hills store,...

Re: Mystery ex-grocery store in La Puente

A 1961 LA Times ad for refers to it as Schaubs Market. It had a Dexter Elliot home appliances department selling Maytag appliances and Curtis Mathes TVs. In 1973 it was a Greatway Food Store, a chain of 10 stores mostly in Whittier and the SGV.

You can see the original building in this image: http://jpg2.lapl.org/theater1/00014406.jpg. The marquee is over the original theater lobby. Based on this view http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=ppctcs54pt4h&style=b&lvl=2&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&sce...

Re: Rancho Cucamonga chain grocer history

I can't tell by the aerial view what it is today, but I'm pretty sure there was an Alpha Beta at the northwest corner of Base Line and Archibald. The shopping center at 19th and Carnelian, where the Hannam is now, opened in 1980. The original anchor tenants were Alpha Beta and Coast to Coast Home Im...

Re: Marie Callender's

Right. I didn't catch the "died Wednesday" part in the first sentence of the obit. I thought it was weird that it would take so long to report. But, still, dying that long after the fall must have led to a miserable last part of his life.

Re: Garfield Theater-turned shopping center, Alhambra

I'm very certain that is the original building where the stores are located today. Whenever I drive by, I always picture the old "Garfield Theater" rooftop sign. If you drive by it, you can see that it is an old building. The storefronts are original. The parking lot in back is where the ...

Re: Market Basket Locations

Would Kroger someday bring back the Market Basket name? Yucaipa licensed the Market Basket name from Kroger and brought it back around 1990 with the intent of creating a Pavilions-type upper-scale chain-within-a-chain, and they did change the name of some Boys stores. The upscale conversion plan ne...

Marie Callender's

Marie Callender's son Don died in 2007 and the obituary was run today in the LA Times. I guess the news traveled slowly. Here are a few excerpts from the obit which can be found at http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/california/la-me-callender11-2009jan11,0,226573.story None of this is probably...

Re: Gottschalks

The San Bernardino Gottschalks is one of a few that is actually three levels. That's a former May Company. May Co had boarded up the entire lower level for many years and I seem to remember that Sportmart took over part of the space with an entrance out to the parking lot on the south side. The old...

Re: Disappearing Sizzlers in your area

At their peak in 1978 there were over 600 Sizzlers. They closed 130 stores in their 1997 bankruptcy, including most of their midwest and northeast stores. As of 2005 there were 226 US stores, 145 of which were in California. Their first store was in Culver City in 1958, I'm guessing it was the one a...

Re: Bob's Big Boy former L.A. locations

The '89 date explains why Bob's quality seemed to decline after that. I could tell something had changed about Big Boy in the early 90's, but I had no idea Marriott had sold them off already. In doing further research, REG made the deal with Marriott in January of 1991 and the deal closed in Februa...

Werent they using the Oval with curisve lettering before the newer, non-cursive oval logo? Yes: http://homepage.mac.com/runchadrun/groceteria/oldralphsoval.jpg It was replaced with the modernized oval sometime in the late 80s, and the oval was more or less dropped altogehter in the last few years. ...
