Re: Publix Markets with "wings" in Florida

The A&P store on Merritt Island -across from Merritt Square - was a Future Store, not a Family Mart. I was not aware of any A&P stores of this type in the Melbourne area, nor of the Family Mart version of A&P, but it is possible they did have a Family Mart down there. As late as 1970, th...

Re: Publix Markets with "wings" in Florida

To clear up any of these dangling details... 1] Publix discount stores were called "Food World." Most were in former Publix stores that had been either closed, or "moved," with the older stores having the wings stripped off and a rotating globe placed in the center between the wo...

Re: Britt's Department Store

To bounce this to the other side of the country, Britt's also had a store at "The Mall of Johnson City" in Johnson City, TN. This must have been sometime around 1975, for I remember that I was driving by that time and stopped to just go in to see what this store was since I had never heard...

Re: Atlanta History Solicited

The news article did not tell if the name Publix Sabor had been used. IN the story, the reporter was standing in the parking lot with the store in the distance behind him. It was easy to see the Publix sign on the front, and some other, smaller back-lit signage, but the 'Sabor' term was not in large...

Re: Atlanta History Solicited

Two additional bits of information on theabove comment: The website for Wayfield Foods does give a picture of all of their stores. While many of them were Winn-Dixies, it is interesting to note that the red brick Riverdale store was a Publix which was built around 1993. Publix opened stores in both ...

Re: Publix Markets with "wings" in Florida

As for A&P on Merritt Island, the comment was right on the mark with A&P having a store nearby. It was a FutureStore, built across Fla 520 from Merritt Square in a shopping center with Cook's Discount Store. The original A&P on Merritt Island was on North Courtney Pike about two blocks s...

Re: Publix Markets with "wings" in Florida

A couple more Publix thoughts, however: As for Tampa, the Nebraska Avenue store was probably the first store of that type to be built in that area, although nearby Lakeland had two, I believe, by that time. George Jenkins had purchased a Tampa chain, American Stores, in the late thirties and renamed...

A&P Merritt Island FL

Moved by moderator from a different topic: And off this topic, but at least directly across the street... was also an A&P. In this Google picture, there is a Family Dollar on the site. While the building looks to be about the same size and on the same footprint as the original A&P, it is di...

Re: Publix Markets with "wings" in Florida

These pictures are wonderful and are bringing back some great memories. I shopped at this Publix on North Nebraska Avenue when I was a student at the University of South Florida. I believe this is a rebuild rather than an re-do of the original store. Originally, this store had a more suburban look t...

Re: Pantry Pride

Setzer's Supermarkets in Jacksonville. That's a name I hadn't thought of in a long time. I remember being in one somewhere in the vicinity of North Main Street in Jacksonville in about 1958. I don't remember there being any Food Fair stores anywhere north of Vero Beach until about 1963, and those th...

Re: Stouffer's Restaurants

Apparently these restaurants weren't confined to the northern areas of the United States. In the early sixties, a Stouffer's restaurant was opened at Cocoa Beach, Florida. It was located off of the lobby at the new Sheraton Hotel. This was Cocoa Beach's second chain restaurant at the time, with the ...

Re: Info about Giant Mart???

Sorry this took so long, but I wanted to get the facts straight on this. I asked the local grocer, Ellis Crook, whose family has owned Crook's Marketplace in Senoia, GA, for over 80 years, ago this chain. He told me that the chain was started and is still owned by a Bill [?] Jones, who is currently ...

Re: Kroger in Weirton West Virginia

We were through there a couple of years ago. This Kroger looks like it belongs there. If you come in from the northern part of the WV panhandle, you have to drive through the guts of a steel mill to immediately come out into the downtown area. this Kroger is just beyond downtown Weirton. I thought i...

Re: 'Rounded' Store Design

This store definitely was a Kroger Sav-On. There were two of these stores built in Savannah. One, on Mall Boulevard across from Oglethorpe Mall, was exactly of this style. I remember when it opened in 1980, as I lived only two blocks from this store. The front of the store just seemed uncomfortable....

Re: A VA/WV-area Acme Markets chain?

It's interesting to read all of this again after six months. Two comments: West Virginia is an oddly shaped state, and the eastern panhandle counties that are a part of the DC metro area are at least a five hour drive from the Bluefield/Princeton area. In the fifties and sixties when Acme was a thri...
