There was a small White Cross chain in Greensboro NC in the 1960s, based around a former Walgreens store downtown. Revco purchased the stores there, probably about 1970.

Please, can we somehow frame this is terms of history?

Per the original poster, he's interested in how health regulations may have eliminated bulk food sales in the past and over time, which wasn't readily apparent from the original post.

Sorry for any confusion. Now back to the topic...

Re: Sacramento: Former Safeway, 2900 Freeport

I suspect it closed when the larger stores on Broadway and on South Land Park Drive were opened. Actually, even closer, I think, was the Franklin Boulevard store which was replaced about 1961 after the original store burned down. It's still a grocer too (King's, I believe), or it was last time I wa...

They were also all over Georgia and in some surrounding states as well (I used to frequent a store in Lakeland, Florida). I believe they got a bit of a boost when they acquired some or all of the Record Bar chain (Remember their graphics? A candy bar wrapper with the name "Record Bar" in ...

Yes. Yes, I did, although I'd forgotten. This sign makes me think the Big G name probaby is original, or at least longstanding:

FYI, Table Supply Stores was the original name of Win-Dixie (as owned by the Davis family) before all the mergers (Winn & Lovett, Dixie Home, etc.)

I was going through some old photos and came across this one I took in 2003. It was a great store, well-preserved from (I assume) it's mid-1960s roots. I'm just wondering if it's a chain prototype or was always an independent. Anyone with ideas?

I love running across old Burger Chefs. They're usually considered a more midwestern and southern chain, but I've found stragglers in Fresno and Redwood City CA as well.

There were two, maybe three in the Charlotte area: -- 10414 East Indpendence Blvd, Matthews NC (may have had Sav-a-Center interior, now Big Lots) -- 7004 East Harris Blvd, Charlotte NC (now Food Lion) -- Tower Place Festival, Pineville NC (not confirmed, but there's a building I suspect) It's intere...

One factor was probably that most retail was closed on Sunday, except for some drugstores, and their wasn't a proliferation of c-stores. In parts off NC, the blue laws even affected c-stores. I was researching something else the other day at the library and came across an article on the first 7-11 ...

Big Star stores NOT connected with Colonial

I know there was a post on something related to this but I can't seem to find it, and either way, it might merit more elaboration. Apparently, there were Big Star stores is places like Mississippi, Arkansas, and maybe Tennessee (perhaps others as well) that were not connected with Colonial Stores. I...

There was a Peaches a block from my house when I was a teenager, so a significant chunk of my early record collection came from there. I won a cpy of the first Tom Petty album the night they opened (on clear red vinyl, yet). They had an unusually good combination of prices and selection. The stores ...
