Thanks. I'm going to start a separate topic on Safeway Toronto locations in the other forum, which I probably should've done before:

David : Thanks for the cleanup. I was trying to keep this neat and organized, and I realize that Gemco is somewhat marginal when it comes to Groceteria subject matter. Gemco is entirely on-topic; they (usually) sold food and were owned by Lucky. It's the discussion that emerged tonight that WASN'T ...

Re: Toronto General

Thanks. That clarifies it all beautifully. So I assume IGA Canada operated in the same co-op/franchise manner as its US cousin, rather than as an actual one-owner chain.

Any specific Tornoto-area ex-Safeway locations I could scout on my next visit?

5814 North Milwaukee, Chicago

Any guesses on this one? I'm still going through odds and ends from my big road trip last fall.

The store may predate the superstore and be a remodel/expansion of a 1960's build. I was thinking that too, since it seems more rectangular than the classic greenhouse. Most of the ground-up greenhouse stores were closer to square, as I recall, with split aisles. I sort of get the same feeling abou...

Thanks,

Beautiful! The exterior is a "superstore" prototype from the early to mid 1970s, while the interior was the one used in most "greenhouse" stores in the late 1970s and early 1980s. I wonder if it was remodeled inside or if this was just sort of a transitional store. It does seem t...

Alpha Beta Company shut down the FAD division in 1970, according to Esther Cramer. The store sites were either sold or converted to AB. FYI, the full list from that book is already featured on the site: http://www.groceteria.com/alphabeta/popups/1973-locations.html . Also, if we're going to discuss...

I drove by that store and took several pictures when I was in Phoenix. It's absolutely stunning, day and night:
