Re: NEW: Tacoma 1924-2020

Some might find it interesting that manual registers were still being used as late as the end of 1990, mostly DTS but a few Sweda stores as well. Southern California was still using Sweda registers at the time of the merger with Vons, also. They were mostly at low volume stores that had not been re...

Re: NEW: Tacoma 1924-2020

The 1980s were a challenging period for retailers, the economy was soft, interest rates high, and a host of new big box grocery discounters (Big Bear, Top Foods, Food 4 Less, Stock Market) were giving legacy grocers grief. Safeway opened many smaller footprint stores with few amenities including ma...

Re: Mayfair grocery in Bakersfield

According to the location page for Bakersfield , there were no fewer than 8 Mayfair stores operating there as of 1965. I'm less sure about the history of their service operations; maybe someone else can chime in here. These photos of a 1960s Los Angeles store clearly show a full-service bakery, so ...

Re: Mayfair grocery in Bakersfield

I am writing a book and am looking to verify if there was a Mayfield grocery in Bakersfield in the mid-1960's. Also, did the Mayfield chain have bakeries for custom cakes at that time? I want my book to be as accurate as possible. Carolinewrites Your subject says Mayfair but your text says Mayfield...

Re: UPC codes & grocery scanning

The older registers were marked "Data Terminal Systems" but the newer ones, or the ones with replacement parts around the display were marked "National Semiconductor Datachecker/DTS". In High School I worked at Mayfair Markets in San Diego and they had just converted to electron...

Re: Shopping Bag Food Stores In Southern California

Looking at the historical aerial, it will be where the current Smart and Final is on Ramona and Valley. The building was remodeled and an autozone added to the south of the old building. It would be unrecognizable today. That makes sense. It matches up with the curve of the street. The original pho...

Re: Stone Way Safeway 1951 - 1993

The store sounds cool but 89 cents a pound for cube steak in 1961 seems really high. At least some things at Safeway are still the same lol :)

Re: Former 1954 Safeway San Francisco - 3132 Clement St.

I also found a photo of this now-demolished Safeway in The San Francisco Examiner archives, from April 1989. A new six-story building housing Safeway and apartments above was being proposed. Love that embedded circle 'S': <a href="https://www.newspapers.com/clip/49244042/safeway-3132-clement-s...

The Linda Vista Plaza/Linda Vista Road supermarkets in San Diego's Linda Vista neighborhood have especially interesting histories. The Linda Vista neighborhood was built very quickly just before and during World War II under federal government contracts as defense housing. See: https://lindavista.o...

Re: Safeway Europe and Australia

Is there a good reason why Safeway's UK division skipped France, Belgium, and Netherlands, and went straight to West Germany for expansion? Safeway's U.S. divisions tended to be centered around major areas and then slowly diffused out to counties beyond the "core city". I don't know your ...
