Remember that Salem and Roanoke are independent cities with their own assessment data - and Roanoke County is different as well. Yeah, I know. It's much easier in NC and CA where that stuff is almost all done at the county level (and where cities are actually parts of counties rather than separate ...

Some great info carried over from another thread: Kroger would be a long shot, mainly if Kroger arrived in Roanoke by acquisition rather than expansion as happened in many Kroger-bannered markets. I don't think Safeway ever reached as far as Roanoke unless it was from the early days of Sanitary bann...

I would say the top contenders are A&P and Colonial. The recessed store front could be a later alteration, done as far back as the 60's or 70's, depending on how long the location has been a Family Dollar. Agreed on the two contenders, although I think the recess rich was discussing the overhea...

Interesting; I'm surprised it was that late. I found the Roanoke GIS site too, and the one on Grandin was constructed in 1940, so maybe they're not 100% identical. Haven't found records for Salem yet.

I was told by someone a few years ago (maybe Storewanderer) that this store retained its original Lucky decor package until about 1998 or so, but was remodeled.

Harris-Teeter may have had stores in Roanoke. A friend of mine was hired to become a manager for Harris Teeter and was to relocate to Roanoke when the company decided to send him to the Greensboro area instead. I was told that Harris Teeter pulled out of Roanoke and Kroger took over the Roanoke HT ...

Safeway seems like a likelier bet or perhaps Big Star, although they often used a tile front. Thanks. It really doesn't read like most Safeway or Big Star prototypes I've seen from the era either, and I'm not sure if Safeway was ever quite this far west in Virginia (anyone?). I guess it could be on...

Roanoke VA

http://www.groceteria.com/journal/graphics7/030507-mick.jpg Hi all. Any thoughts on the history of this rather fascinating southern Virginia city? I've made several trips there since moving to Winston-Salem, and I think it's going to be my next "feature" city on the site. I maay also inco...

3215 Williamson Road NW, Roanoke VA

http://groceteria.com/forboard/williamson2.jpg There are at least two more stores just like this around Roanoke as well. One in downtown Salem is an antique mall, while one at 1310 Grandin Rd SW is now a natural foods co-op. Based on the "stepped" roof line, they look like former A&Ps...

Does anybody remember a drugstore called Super S by Safeway. I remember going to a Super S in Banning Ca., and when was Super S bought by Thrifty's ? There are dozens of posts about Safeway Super S on the forum including several in this very thread. If you'll do a search, you'll find plenty of info...

2. In the 1930s, Greenville, Michigan had two A&P's a block apart. Actually, that was fairly common in the 1930s. Most older chains hit their peak in terms of numbers of stores between 1929 and 1935, which is when they started consolidating into supermarkets. Since the stores served a primarily...

I've split this discussion off from a different topic. Please (as always) try to keep it focused on history leading to the situation rather than just the current status of the stores. Thanks.
