The Burlington Mall (Burlington, MA) originally opened in the late 1960s with a Stop & Shop. It eventually disappeared and the space was filled, but never by another grocery store.

Also in the suburban Boston area: The Billerica Mall (Billerica, MA) and the Middlesex Mall (Woburn, MA) both opened in the late 1970s (approx.) with attached DeMoulas/Market Basket stores with exterior entrances. Both still exist.

Topanga Plaza in Canoga Park, CA (now known as Westfield Topanga) opened in 1964 as a fully enclosed mall and included a market on the east side, just south of the May Company that anchored the north end of the mall. An aisle running east to west (with entrances to the eastern and western parking lots) separated the May Company from the market.

I don't remember what market was there--according to the "Mall Hall of Fame" site, it was a Food Fair. I don't recall if there was a separate market entrance to the eastern (Owensmouth Ave) parking lot, in addition to the mall entrance.

Whatever the market was, it was later subdivided into two stores, with various tenants over the years--including a sporting goods store, and some sort of "novelty/collectibles" store--possibly Akron? I bought a 2 foot high plastic RCA Victor Nipper Dog there! At one point, Trader Joe's occupied one of the spaces, kind of bringing things full circle.

I'm assuming that the whole structure was demolished around 2005 when the mall was expanded to the east, adding the Target Store and the Owensmouth parking garage.

Meanwhile, on the west side of that aisle next to May Company was a Thrifty Drug Store. For some reason, we always parked in the western (Topanga Canyon Blvd) parking lot, and entered the mall passing through Thrifty. Why we never used the "official" mall entrance just north of the Thrifty escapes me!

As Topanga Plaza became more upscale, the Thrifty and adjoining stores (including a Chuck Burger on the Square) were eventually built out into the courtyard that was to the south of May Company and became a higher-end store, probably an Orbach's.

The mall was, at the time, pretty small with an Iszard's Department Store (a local store) and a JC Penney, along with a handfull (maybe 25) of other smaller stores. It was small, but a real mall.

When Arnot Realty did a major expansion of the mall (late 70's?) the Great American disappeared.
There was also a Great American as one of the anchor stores in the Southside Mall in Oneonta, NY.

Not sure if it was mentioned previously in the thread...

Richmond, Indiana. Richmond Square Mall had a Kroger on one end. It's main entrance was outside, but they had a small hallway (basically, enough for a cart) to the mall interior.

In the NE, pathmark still operates quite a number of locations inside *old* malls. These stores are fairly old, some of them 30, 40 years old. However, most have been expanded.

This reminded me of something - there is one Pathmark on Route 35 in Woodbridge Township - Colonia area (for those who might know the area).

This plaza is basically a Kmart with a Pathmark (maybe one other store between, not sure) BUT to get into the Pathmark, you have to walk down an enclosed hallway which has 5 or so small stores (a $ store, nail place, food place etc.) that can be accessed only from that hallway before you get to the Pathmark.

So not really (much of) a mall, but very similar set-up and an unusual set-up for a grocery store.

You are correct. The Food Fair was one of 3 main anchors at Cherry Hill Mall, the other tow being S&C and Bamberger's.

The Food Fair/Pantry Pride store was torned down in the 1980's and replaced by a JC Penney.

I know this post is years old!

How do you explain that one? Malls were brand new at that time!
