I didn't know this was once a Safeway. (Admittedly, I wasn't down in this area all that much). This has to have been a Market Basket prior to 1982, which is evident because MB used this same fascia as part of a chain-wide renovation to all their stores in the early 80's. (We're talking about the structure on the left, by the way, folks!)

Did it become Safeway after Market Basket closed, and before Vons took over the Safeway locations? I think I remember it being a Vons, but I'm not sure... (Lucky keeps popping into my head, but that could be just because there was a Lucky several miles north in another former MB location) ... Does anyone know what it was prior to this Japanese Market?

- In the "divested regions" thread I started a week or so ago, I found and posted photos of several SoCal Vons marinas (Long Beach, Carpinteria, and the Alvarado store)...

- The Highland Park store, according to this shot from Live Local, operated as a Pic N Save for a spell:

Image

- Here's a shot of the San Dimas marina on Live Local, although front area has been remodeled a bit.

its still open as a big lots! Its in a great location. dont see why a store couldnt survive there...

http://img220.imageshack.us/img220/8282/swydimasii6.jpg

- And speaking of remodeled marinas, here's Live Local's shot of the location in Rancho Palos Verdes on Hawthorne that was mentioned earlier:

http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/8489/swyrpvcy3.jpg

- Even more drastic in another Live Local view is the Bed Bath and Beyond at Ventura and Whitsett in the valley; the Marina roof is still visible from overhead while the remodeled false-front sticks out as well.
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/665/ ... ettfu2.jpg

- Live Local view of the Santa Monica/Montana Pavillions; the stone facade and a close look at the curved roof are hints of the store's past, covered up by a new flat facade added recently.

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/4049 ... anamg9.jpg

EDIT - This thread is talking about that specific store: http://www.groceteria.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=650

- Is this Live Local view the former Downey gable? There are several shopping centers in the area but this was the only building with a noticeable roofline...

http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/4009/downeytv2.jpg

- One more Live Local find for tonight: the Sylmar store at Gladstone and Hubbard...

This San Dimas store was a Market till a few years ago when Albertsons built a huge store just to the East of it. It has been subdivided since this picture has been taken, and the exterior remodeled.

Around the same time a Smiths opened a few blocks west on the northwest corner of Imperial and Beach. When they pulled out of Southern California, this location became Vons (and still is a Vons) and the old location became Marshalls. I think it's now a Michaels craft store.
This location has an interior sign above the entrance "Serving La Habra since 1989"
Do most Vons stores have this inside sign? I've also seen it on Safeways in the Bay Area (I remember thinking the store in Albany had been around a LONG time!)
I'd have to drive by the center to be exact...yet, I believe the Marshalls site is where PAVILIONS PLACE ran for a spell before VONS assuming Smith's site.

BREA--Safeway store still standing, as VONS. In the "bend" of State College, as it turns into Central. Store is SMALL...yet is preparing for a remodel. Main sign on the street is the old/long white sign. Lots of space on each side of VONS on the sign!

Bloomington/Fontana--Old marina store still standing off the 10 freeway. Is a furniture store.

San Bernardino--(1) off Highland Avenue, is currently a surgery center. The other near Arden...is a church.

The old Thriftimart/Safeway/Vons in Montebello is apparently getting a remodel. It hasnt been remodeled in years and still has the red script on white walls package.

The site in Brea has been Lifestyled. Rather surprised...as it is such a small store. It obviously must be doing well enough to warrant. Thought they would have built a new building...on the opposite corner (condos built)...or down the street at the former Brea Hospital site...which is vacant with a for sale/lease sign.

Old/long white signage on street has been removed for a smaller on the ground type. Probably city code.

You can still see on the tile roof...where the old Safeway sign had been.

Inside signage states SERVING BREA SINCE 1967. As discussed on other threads...funny how they determine WHICH year to put. Year THAT store opened...versus at some point in the town a Safeway or Vons existed. 1967 for this site is probably accurate.

I've seen the "Serving since" signs on a number of Safeways up here as well. For example, the one here in Redmond says 1956, although its current location did not exist before 1975 or so. I haven't quite figured out where they were located before that.

The former Brea Safeway (Central/State College - Brea Blvd) is the tiniest Vons I've been in outside of Avalon (Catalina Island).
The locals refer to it as Vons Junior.
I think the Pavillions Place you were thinking of was in the Sunny Hills neighborhood of Fullerton - corner of Rosecrans and Euclid. It was an upscale store but lacked the in-store vendors of other Pavillions I've visited.

Stopped by the Montebello VONS (former Thriftimart & Safeway).

I charged my purchase. The receipt says VONS STORE 3258 across the bottom.

Yet, comically, when the credit card statement arrived...it lists it as SAFEWAY STORE 3258.

Jeff...have you noticed this before? Did this ever change when it became VONS...or has it remained the same since it was converted?!

Never noticed that before. I do love the SERVING MONTEBELLO SINCE 1961 or whatever it is.

I believe they switched to "VONS" when VONS took over Safeway Stores (since Safeway at the time of the 1988 Buyout weren't majority stake holders?). My credit card statement sometimes says "VONS", "Pavilions" or "Safeway" depending on the store I shop at. I think the current store numbers are VONS numbering system. Although I did notice West Hollywood Pavilions store number changed from 2230 after the Lifestyle conversion to a different number (can't remember off the top of my head).
