Loveman's of Alabama and Loveman's of Chattanooga are two different chains started by two different branches of the same family. The logos were very similar. The Alabama chain went out in the early-80's while the Chattanooga chain was bought by Proffit's, who came under Saks ownership with fellow Birmingham chain Parisian(Saks,Inc. was actually the new coroporate name for Parisian, which bought out Saks 5th Avenue). Most Hess' in Proffit's operating region became Proffit's as well.
Of course now Belk has taken over Proffit's and McRae's from Saks early last year and is in the process of buying Parisian. It gets more convoluted if you delve into Hess' taking over defunct department stores, Dillard's acquisition of Mercantile Stores and required divestures and Belk's exiting many of these same markets in previous years.
