Montgomery Ward - Metro North Mall - KC

Post by tesg »

I stumbled upon a nicely preserved Montgomery Ward this morning at the Metro North Mall in Kansas City. Signage and all, even on the auto center.

The mall itself is a dying 70's dinosaur that I really should have gone into. It has space for around 110 tenants and four anchors, but currently has only around 20 active mall tenants and one active anchor.

That last picture confirms my suspicion of the Sears at Sandusky Mall in Ohio, mainly that the Automotive Center sign was original to when that store was Wards.

Pictures of that store can be found here:

Found a great Flickr photo set of the entire mall, including an interior shot of the Ward's entrance, and more closeups of the exterior and auto center...

I do find it odd that the auto center has the one black sign with the rest being white, and all in the same lettering style. I know it was not uncommon though for Wards to have signs from several different generations all on the same building. That building looks very similar in design (with different overhangs) to the Sandusky store, although Sandusky was only one story.
