I just discovered a book about commercial architecture in southern California in the early twentieth century. It is "The Drive-In, the Supermarket, and the Transformation of Commercial Space in Los Angeles, 1914-1941" by Richard Longstreth, a professor at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. If you search on "longstreth" in this message board search engine, you'll find that Longstreth has been discussed at least two other times on this message board (concerning two of his other publications).

Richard Longstreth's books are all pretty much amazing. I actually just got around to starting his (2007?) book on the history of department stores recently. I can't recommend him highly enough.
