Edmonton Chain Grocery/Supermarket Locations, 1930-1987

This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Edmonton between 1930 and 1987, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections.

Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and don’t include.

Notes:

  • Edmonton’s street network is unusual in that it features a numbered grid and quadrant system, but this system is not centered on the center of town, which is more or less located at the intersection of 100th Street and 100th Avenue. Therefore, basically all of the city is in the northwest quadrant, and very high block and street numbers may actually be very close to downtown.
  • 1945 and 1950 directories do not have a classified listing for grocers so some chains may be missing.

Store tags:

  • Black & White
  • Dominion
  • Foodland
  • IGA
  • Loblaws/L-Mart
  • Nu-Way
  • Red & White
  • Safeway
  • Tait Groceteria
