This is a list of all chain grocery locations my research has uncovered in Gary between 1911 and 1975, compiled from city directories, telephone books, and other sources. There may be some omissions due to incomplete or missing data, etc. and I welcome suggestions and corrections. Please read about my methodology for more information about what I do and do not include.

Notes:

• Gary is interesting in that it was established in 1906, so this list covers its chain stores more or less since the beginning.
• Gary locations are hard to confirm as so much of the built environment of the city has been destroyed.
• I am not certain if there was a connection between Consumers Sanitary Coffee & Butter Stores and Consumers Packing Co, both of which existed in 1930. As none of the latter’s stores had become Kroger-Consumers by 1935, I suspect there may not have been.
• National seems to have had a spotty history in Gary, disappearing during World War II and then returning with an assortment of stores, many of which seem to have closed relatively quickly.
